I'm only 16 years old, and I just had wrist surgery about 3-4 weeks ago. My job won't let me work again until my doctor clears me, and that may take a few months. I'm also going to be living with my parents for another year and a half, then finally I'm off to college. Which then I'll get a new hi tech TV. So I'm just going sometihng to last a year.

My 13 yr old Sony is dying. It takes 16 minutes to start up ( I timed it ) and picture is basically crap.

I was just wondering if a 23-27 inch really sweet SDTV would be a good choice? I have heard that HDTV is really only noticeable when it's a large set.

I would save almost 300-400 dollars. And as you know I can't make money, and only have like 250-300 in the bank right now.

Also would a better choice be an EDTV? And would someone explain to me what that is? lol.

Thanks anyone for the help.

In your situation, It probably wouldn't be worth it to get an HDTV right now. If I were you, I would wait until you can work again so you can save up a little more.

In this era when buying a tv, its either Hd or no tv. Because if you get a sd tv now, later on your gonna want to buy an hdtv. Edtv is basically a flat panel sdtv. Its just a stupid gimmick to trick lest informed people looking for a flatpanel hdtv into buying a piece of sh*t edtv because its cheaper.

For consoles, unless your rich, HD isn't worth the money, if your on a tight budget, just dont bother, its not worth it.

For PC's however, it's arguably more worth it, but thats not what your enquiring about.

I have a little Samsung LCDTV/Monitor Syncmaster 710MP that i received as a present a while back, now, until i got my Xbox 360, i had no idea it was technicly HD, well, it's not true HD as it's not widescreen, but it's higher res than a regular TV due to being a PC monitor at the same time.

This explained why my normal games looked so bad, being stretched to the monitor wasnt good for image quality (on a lot of PS2 games i cant even read the text, and dont even ask about PS1, SNES/NES games) Same for my 360.

But, once i got VGA cables, it smoothed it out so much and looks very crisp and nice running at 1024x768, however, i don't really notice any difference while playing it on my normal TV downstairs except screen tearing on Dead Rising, their is less of it on lower resolution SDTV.

My advice, buy whatever you can afford, but unless you have the money to throw around, buy a normal tv, or something that will fulfill more than the use of just being HD for your xbox (Like mine for example which was my PC monitor for 2 years, even though i no longer have a PC, just a laptop) as buying an HDTV just for that purpose, considering my own personal experience, would seem to me like a waste of money.

Feel free to disregard, like i said, just my personal opinion/experience.

I think you should hold off on HDTV until you work again like someone else said. With your budget, you'll be regretting your purchase down the road if you buy now.

To the person who said HD isn't worth it... you probably haven't watched HD on a good looking display. It's a huge improvement over standard definition tv.

Seriously, if you've got something relevant to add, do it, i was just giving the guy my experiences, and yes, i have  experiences so called 'true HD' and i noticed a difference, but not one i would pay that amount of money for.

If your just gonna hover and make irrelevent unhelpful smart alec remarks, i suggest you either go find another sandpit to play in, or offer some helpful advice to the guy. I offered what little information i had to give, and you give nothing but jip.

Your comment above was hardly helpful or informative, so unless you have any relevent info to give the guy, buzz off, after all your not here to argue with me, your here to offer this guy support, it is the nature of the forum after all...

Bottom line, HD doesnt matter unless you have a budget that will accomodate, sure, if you can buy an HDTV, do it, you wont be dissapointed, but if you've got a tight budget, even if you can afford one, it might pay you to save some of that cash.

I was just pointing out that if you aren't really watching real hd then you really arn't in any position to say hd is not worth until you really experienced it. then you turned this into an argument by typing a comeback like 'Looks like someone has more money than sense'.

While I didn't like the "you have more money than sense" comment towards HDTV owners, I have to kind of agree with the "don't worry about HD if you don't have the money". -BUT- I don't think it's a good idea to throw 250-300 bucks away for a standard television at this point. If the OP doesn't have enough money for HD right now and really wants to get his tv replaced, I'd recommend buying a used CRT tv to use until he can upgrade to HD. It seems like a waste to pay such a high premium for a new tv that'll only be used for one year before he moves out. A good place to look for used tv's in my experience is craigslist, where my roommate picked up a used 27" for $70CAD (~$60USD) and it worked just fine for us students.

If that was what you were going to say, you shouldve said it, instead of making a snidy one liner remark.

And for your information, yes i have seen one of those expensive real HDTVs, i know a couple people with them, and no, i still dont consider the difference enough to warrant paying that kinda money. Not for me, yet, at least.
