Is this true? If so, why not?

Is there a such thing as an external video card? Like USB compatible power? Just curious.

There are very few laptops on the market with upgradeable GPUs, so yes, 99.9999% of laptops cannot upgrade their GPU.

No there is no such thing an external videocard - they take too much bandwidth for an external connection to ever be feasable.

Can I buy one in a store right now? The point stands. People said something similar was going to happen for the HD 2900 - it was supposed to be in an external enclosure - something about it requiring so much power it couldn't be in the case. Tom's Hardware did a thing explaining why that would never work.

In any case, I wouldn't trust it until I see actual reviews and benchmarks - a USB GPU would have bandwidth issues - I certainly wouldn't envision a replacement for an internal card in that box...

The Asus prototype hasn't gone into production, and if it does, it should include more protection for the card in it. However, it isn't for USB, but rather for CardBus.
