I'm thinking about buying this DIY kit. Here are the specs:

  1. AMD Athlon II X4 635 Propus 2.9GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor (Model: ADX635WFGMBOX)
  2. MSI AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX Motherboard (Model: 785GTM-E45)
  3. G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory (Model: F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK)
  4. Rosewill Black Computer Case w/ 500W Power Supply (Model: R519-BK)

I'm worried about that PSU. 500W doesn't seem like it's enough. For my video card i'm just going to reuse my 9800 GT, which I guess is a little outdated these days.

Will this 500W power supply be enough?

500w is plenty just not a Rosewill one. Get a corsair, antec, coolermaster or ocz one.

Is that brand really that bad? It comes with the case in the combo deal, and I have another 500W as a backup. SOOOOO your saying for sure thats enough? Can someone else back this up?

Thanks for the reply though btw.

Should be enough just for a single 9800GT. Only thing is Rosewill's lower-end PSUs like that one generally isn't know for it's reliability.

I have a higher end "performance" series. Not sure if it is rosewill's higher end but it seem like it, yet it might be crap. Either way, It has plenty of Amps. Check that on your power supply. Mine handles a 9800gt easily. I am confident it will be fine with a HD5870 as the amps definitely meet the requirement for it. I have had a good experience with rosewil, but know that it isnt super high end so you might run into something. Also, their cheap cases dont have very good airflow. I am going to modify my rosewill case so my front case fan can actually suck air in.

I'm just gonna hijack this thread for a sec, is LC power a good brand? I'm getting their LC5550 550W Powersupply and some guy commented that LC power likes to tell you the peak power instead of the normal power output the PSU gives?

Haven't heard of it, so I would say no.

See you found the $304 combo deal from newegg! That is a great value, that PSU will run your 9800gt if it holds what it say it does, 31A (372w alone on the 12v rails is enough to power a HD5870) on the combined +12v should be enough with a good margin. A 8800gt would in rare cases use up to 120w, so on the 12v you got 252w left for the Ahl 2 x4, MB, RAM should be pleanty as they also take from the other rails..
