Same here.
It's not that it's my favourite genre as much as there's just more of them that are good - first person shooters.
I think I prefer RPG over FPS and RTS most of all, but there are so few great games in either genre that FPS is by far my most played, so I guess I probably have to go with FPS.
Iused to love FPS games just for the no nonsense quick arcade type action butrecently i've turned to RPG's for the rich storylines, character development and longer gameplay. I'm I getting old or something?!? :Pzeus_gb
i'm exactly the opposite :)
i like to hop in (online) for some quick fragging. i can play them for 10 minutes, or 5 hours (on rare occasions). i feel like i don't have the time anymore to get into those deep RPGs.
i don't even get bored to good shooters like BF2.
I have to go with FPS.
In my mind, there are two ways to play an FPS:
1. Competitive style: Unreal Tournament, Battlefield 2/2142 for example
2. Story driven, and sometimes with RPG elements (hybrids): Half-Life, No One Lives Forever, Deus Ex, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for example.
Either way is a win :) and the big thing about FPS for me is the feeling that I'm actually in the environment, traversing the landscape, walking down the corridor, and I'm actually in the action that's taking place, the opportunity to explore.
No other genre can duplicate that cinematic/immersive feeling as well as an FPS. Too many menus can take me out of it, bird's eye view or too much micromanagement takes me out of it.
RPGs are the other genre that have the potential to create such an environment, with less action. But like mfsa mentioned, there aren't enough good ones (Hellgate: London? nah) and besides I dig sci-fi, but I'm not into fantasy themes as much :)
I find that I like Turned-Based Strategy the most, followed by squad-based strategy games. I like TBS games because they give you time to sit back and think about your strategy as opposed to ramming thousands of men into each other.
I also like most role-playing and action adventure games.
NO FPS FOR ME
1) Combat Flight sims (IL-2, Battle of Britain, etc)
2) Tactical level wargames (Combat Mission1-3, Take Command: 2nd Manassass, Harpoon, Fantasy Wars, X-COM)
3) Naval sims (Silent Hunter III, Dangerous Waters, Age of Sail II)
4) RPGs (but ones with depth, not action-oriented games with a slight patena of RPG touches like Diablo. I hate crap like Diablo)
5) Operational/strategic level wargames (War in the Pacific, AGEOD's American Civil War, Europa Universalis)
6) Tactical FPS (SWAT 4, Hidden and Dangerous 2, Armed Assault)

Pretty much as long as they aren't too abstracted like Caesar III-IV or aren't too dumbed down or historically altered to appeal to the mainstream RTS crowd. Stuff like Age of Empires or Company of Heroes just don't do it for me.
Funny, most people that are going to say RPG are going to name games that aren't even really RPG's.
Oh well, why do I keep trying, anyways.
But anyways, hardcore offline RPG's for me. (you see how I have to define that which used to be called just "RPG").
@ lordlors: If you haven't played Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Morrowind and Planescape Torment, then why aren't you playing, like, right now?ShotGunBunny
I'm still playing The Witcher and SMG. I'll try to find the great cl@ssics if it's available in our local video game stores since i have seen it once and it's bundled.
which should i play first? the baldur's gate series? it seems planescape torment isn't available here only baldur's gate series bundle 4 in 1, fallout 2 and morrowind.
This is a hard poll for me to answer. I enjoy playing all of the genre's listed. It depends on what mood I'm in.
I've always been a fan of rpg's because of the rich storyline, detailed character developement, and rich interactive environments.
Fps's are great sometimes because sometimes after a long day you just want to sit back and shoot s***. I really do enjoy when games cross genre's like S.T.A.L.K.E.R.... it had a large environment, but exciting first person action sequences. This blend of action, stratigy, and character development helped make this game great for me.
RTS's are a totally different form of genre. RTS's are usually an experience only researved for the PC. I really enjoy the thinking and the planning and the resource management in these games. I feel that a lot of consol only players miss out on this wonderful genre (Yes I know you can play various RTS's on a consol, but the controls are wacky).
My favorites are actually RTS, FPS, RPG, Racing, Fighting, in that order. I play traditional RPG's not MMO's. MMO's are at bottom of list with Simulation, Sports, and Puzzle games. I enjoy the occasional Adventure, Platform, Action, and Turn Based Strategy games.
Edit: Forgot Shooters in the occasional games.
