stalker, orange box get a mention

I think the honest contenders are Crysis, The Orange Box, Sam and Max Season 1 and The Witcher.

In many recent years, I have played word association with GOTY and immediately come up with my choice. But this year, no, it's hard. I have to think about it. And I do not like thinking one bit.

I think I just have to go with Crysis - it does everything right, it makes almost no misakes, it's a great all-round package. The only thing I don't like about the game is that people always assume we only like it because of how good looking it is.

But like the blonde with a masters degree, Crysis is a lot more than just a great rack. It's a wonderful gaming experience and little can honestly compare in terms of depth and breadth of gameplay - and those visuals do affect how the game feels and plays. The visuals matter.

PC GOTY: The Witcher

GOTY: Mass Effect

I´ve played TF2/COD4/Crysis, but for me, Portal takes the cake (haha,it sure does =D).

Great design, simple but innovative... and nice touch of humor with a great ending! too bad it was too short!

LOL - I personally have to completely agree, that's pretty much what I think about SMG :P

However, the game has huge mass market appeal, all the way from preteens to the geriatric ones. Being on a console also helps in that respect. I can see why it got rave reviews, and I'm sure it's fun. "Kiddie themed" games are the about last things I want to play right now though. Give me an immersive, cinematic, mature storylined experience!

I'd have to say Super Mario Galaxy probably is the leading contender though.

Alot of good titles this year, ultimately for me it's Crysis! :)

You've played one platformer, you've played them all (the same is with FPSs and RTSs). I played Super Mario 64 and it was nothing special. A platformer doesn't deserve to be GOTY (And I hate Mario's voice)

This was a sad year imo.

No one truly spectacular game.

smg is too critically acclaimed that it will win at most places. i am also not a big fan of this game, to me it seems the same old getting in and out of pipes stuff, but everyone else is loving it

It's not that it's incredibly good. The thing about SMG is that you can get into it amazingly easy and it's fun enough to have you stay untill the end. Also that unlike the PC, titles will run the same on every system so the experience will be the same aswell.

i'm pretty sure that gamespot will pick crysis for goty. they gave it a high enough score, and pc gaming has been overlooked too often in the past (besides wow, i think). crysis definitely has the hype and the wow factor that will make it stand out above sequels like halo 3 and super mario galaxy. bioshock didn't get a high enough score by gamespot to compete. it's time for pc gaming to shine!

for me, though i haven't played crysis yet, goty goes to episode 2. 5 hours of episode 2 easily beats 10 hours+ of other shooters.

id have to say portal or bioshock

those games really touched my emotional circuit that i havent felt in games for a while. not to mention both are very immersive, gameplay is fun, and the story makes you want to go further

On the PC my GOTY is either COD4 or Portal.

On the consoles however, I'd pick either Assassin's Creed or COD4.
