Personally I upgrade when I can't play games smooth anymore. Fancy effects does help on the immersion of the game, but it's not really a requirement on my behalf. I'm more into the old stuff myself. What's your reason?

When I either can't run games smoothly at medium-low settings, with a decent amount of features, or I can get a card with a very significant boost over my current card (40% ballpark) for less than $300.
