1. CryEngine 2 (Crytek)
2. Essence (Relic)
3. Source (Valve)
Don't flame me for putting Essence above Source, please.

ditto, but I would add the engine that Medieval total War 2 use
I look at engines from the view of the games that were made with them, not the technical capabilites of the engines themselves. So with that in mind...
1. id tech 3 (quake 3) - there were so many great titles developed on this engine, including Jedi Outcast, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Call Of Duty, American McGee's Alice, Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault, Soldier Of Fortune II, etc.
2. Unreal - some really good games were made using this tech, including Deus Ex, Rune, Wheel Of Time, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Clive Barker's Undying, etc.
3. Lithtech - powered all of the Monolith games, including the NOLF series, Tron 2, Aliens v Predator 2, and others...
4. Aurora - which powers NWN and it's expansions and modules, and underpins The Witcher and NWN2.
5. Source - a good engine that is slowly gaining popularity, and apart from the Half-Life 2 games has been used for Dark Messiah, Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines, Portal, and is being used for The Crossing and Zeno Clash.
A special mention goes to the Gamebryo engine, which powers hundreds of games across all genres and platforms, and includes the likes of Morrowind and Oblivion.
1. Scimitar "Assasssins Creed"
2.Source .... 2 words "its VALVE"
3.Unreal3 so many games :D
4.Essence CoH & soon DoW2 :D
5.SAGE ... C&C generals , Battle For Middle eArht , Tiberium Wars & soon Red Alert 3 ! So old but so good looking !
just wait until Frostbite comes out, here is a gameplay video too...

Argh I hate the doom 3 engine. Everything looks all plasticy, said this when it came out to haha. Although Prey looked awesome.SimpJee
True. On top of that, the shadow effects are way too over-exaggerated.
FlatOut Engine, so much potential. Could be used to create a kick ass Carmageddon 4 game.
Unreal (all of them)
Source
I don't actually know much about engines so (in no particular order)
Source
Whatever Company of Heroes used (Essence)
BF2 engine
SAGE
Whatever World in Conflict used.
RAGE in my opinion is one the best ever. Toriko42
its pretty impossible to judge how good the rage engine will be from a couple of game clips. Wouldnt you say?

What? Did i see someone type Aurora? Madness... That engine is incredibly poor. NWN used Aurora, and NWN2 uses a heftily updated version now called the Electron engine, and from my experience they're both awful. As Gamespot said themselves " Steep system requirements for a game that doesn't look particularly good."
It's got to be Unreal 3 and the new engine from Crytek for me. UT3 and Crysis exhibit probably the best graphics I've seen this year so far, though the Unreal engine performed flawlessly and provided me with beautiful visuals with no loading delay. Where as Crysis stuttered massively whilst loading.
However, Source looks good from what I've seen so far, I have to say.
Source Engine.
Max FX Engine.
Company of Heroes one - not sure of the name. Someone help me.
Unreal 3 Engine.
