Zip files are just archives usually used to compress data. There are some self extracting zip files but they are usually(always?) exe extensions. Zip files are supported by windows XP or winzip/winrar. All you need to do is open up the file with one of those programs and extract the contents to the specified folder. Usually there is a readme.txt file or instructions on the site as to where they go.

If it shows up with an icon already you may be able to open it with Windows zip utility. Try double cliking on it and if you see the contents just extract it to where you want on your hard drive.

Actually I would suggest getting 7-Zip from Sourceforge and using that in place of the preinstalled Winzip utility, its AMAZINGLY faster for compressing/decompressing and has additional features.
