anyways...GrimGrimoire is worth checking out. Disgaea, Disgaea 2, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Stella Deus are all 2D-ish but they are all SRPG's. Not sure if you're into those.
Maybe you should go back to the PSX for that, much more likely to find good ones there. Suikoden, Persona, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile. If you are looking for older ones then check out Final Fantasy Anthlolgy, Chronicles and Origins for 6 awesome strictly 2D games.
To the SRPGs above I would add Growlanser Generations for the PS2, FF tactics, Tactics Ogre and Vandal Hearts for the PSX.
That's all I have for you if you just want a normal 2D JRPG. I never catagorize turn-based strategy games as RPGs, because the only thing they have in common are having a story (WOW!), and character building. That alone doesn't make it an RPG to me. Heck, Dawn of Mana is often catagorized as an Action-RPG, even though Devil May Cry 3 has more RPG elements.

While I realize that Odin Shpere is getting a lot of good praise for a reason, I wouldn't call it an RPG for the same reasons I wouldn't call Demon Stone an RPG.

Just the backgrounds are 3D but the rest are all hand drawn sprites which are all 2D.
I agree... the characters are 2d... but the way I see it a 2d game takes place on a 2d surrounding. As this is not the case of Disgaea, I wouldn't call it a 2d game :P
