I suppose it would depend if you wanted to play a small number of brand new games, or a large number of old games. Different people have different priorities I guess.
Get the PS3, because u can still play a "crapload" of PS2 games. Wont make sense to get an outdated system. A year from now when you have nothing new to play on PS2 you will wish you had bought a PS3.

Assuming you've played nothing in the PS2 library, it would take you more than a year to beat all of the great games, let alone all of the semi decent.
Do you have your eye on any ps2 games? If so , why not just get a ps2. If your desperate, just go ahead and shell out 600 dollars and play a couple of new games like virtua fighter 5 or the upcoming ninja gaiden sigma.
Get the PS3 because you can always play the PS2 games on the PS3. When Metal Gear Solid 4, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, etc come out on PS3, then you'll be wishing you had one. Besides, PS2 games are just going to get cheaper and cheaper.
PS2 will soon lack online games and adding to that the PS3 is backwards compatible.
AFCOURS PS3 > PS2 if you are only going to compare gaming libraries, the backwards compatibility makes this an easy decision. however there are more factors to keep in mind the most obvious one would its price. a more fairer question would be

Unlike people here ignorantly state, you would most likely regret buying a PS3. The PS2 and a crapload of games could last you hours upon hours. Depending on your taste, there are 0-3 PS3 games worth buying. Why waste 600 dollars now on something you're not going to be using much when you can spend 600 dollars on a system and games that could give you 400 hours of entertainment (If you like more than just the mainstream RPGs like Final Fantasy, you could certainly get 1000 hours out of 600 dollars worth of games.) The PS3's price WILL drop at some point. The PS2 is not outdated, but within two years or so, it may become rare. It's true you could play PS2 games on the PS3, but buying all the games you would have bought and the PS3 will obviously cost a lot more money. Assuming it doesn't flat out die, (which is doubtful) PS3 will still be alive in 3 years when it's cheaper.

get a ps2 first and start to save some money to buy a ps3 when good games are coming out..I'd rather invest on something which has been proven to be a success than a new next gen console which is still struggling....yes a ps3 can do a lot of things,but I think my pc can do the same thing better...$600 is too much for now...like the last two gen,I will just wait for a 'slim' version of ps3 before I consider getting one..in the meantime,I might consider getting either a Wii or Xbox360,which are more affordable..
I would get the PS2 with the games, because as it stands, the PS3 is just an over priced paper weight thanks to a lack of noteworthy titles and line up.
