Well, as a true fan of the Chronno Trigger gameplay style, I've been looking for similar games to my loved PS2.

I've tried all the Atelier Iris series, and I hated it. So much potential, wasted in a big mess of weak battles, no impact at all. Great storyline, charismatic characters, but the game still managed to suck, I really, REALLY hate when they do that.

Oh well, now that I got it off my chest, back to the question: a good 2D RPG for PS2, does it exist????

Please help this old school gamer finding it!

Wait for Odin Sphere , Grim Grimoire and if you don't mind SRPG , Soul Nomad ( name was changed from Soul Cradle when it sold in Japan ) is coming this August.

I've tested both Disgaea's, not my style, the "board game" spirit makes me nervous. I guess Im going to grab my SNES and play Chrono Trigger again till those tittles come up!

Well, if you don't care for Disgaea, I have a feeling the aforementioned upcoming Soul Nomad (a.k.a. Soul Cradle) may not be to your taste either. At least as a huge Disgaea fan, I'm hoping they're going to be as similar as they appear, time will tell.

There's not an awful lot on the pure 2D RPG front for the PS2, mainly because the PS1 did so much in that area that people were itching to move to 3D or semi-3D by the end of the PS1/start of the PS2.

But if you're really jonesing for the old school classics, keep in mind that your PS2 can also play those great 2D RPGs for the PS1. Aand many of those are still considered about as good as it gets, if you can still find them. There's another recent thread here about that very thing in fact, so I won't rehash it all. But Chrono Cross, the early FF games, and even the FF Chronicles pack with the revamp of FF IV and Chrono Trigger for the PS1 are possibilities. Pick up a PS1 memory card and a few of these for your PS2, and you're good to go.

I agree with Silvaryn.  I'll also add that while it's not entirely 2D, Tales of Legendia was a pretty fun game.  Only it's battle system is in 2D.

Also worth mentioning is Dragon Quest VIII.  While it's not in 2D, it does offer that old school game play with an old school look.  And the character designs were made by the same fella that did Chrono Trigger, Akira Toriyama.

Valkyrie Profile doesn't exactly play like an old school RPG, but it is in 2-D and has a good simple battle system as well, though I've only played the original. But i don't think the PS2 sequel was much different.:)

You'd be better off looking for PS1 RPGs.

I agree, I bought Dragon quest VIII and I love it as well as Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross.
