Kinda sorta. All the games take place in the same world, but yeah you can pick any of them up and get a full story from them. I'd suggest picking up the earliest made one you can (probably AC4 as AC2 and AC3 are hard as hell to find, and AC1 is skippable).
Who the hell told you they had a story??? Thats a big fat lie. The storyline/plot is pathetic and sad and the last reason you should think about playing ace combat. The only thing ace combat offers is awesome graphics, nice replays and great controls. Heatseeker is a buggy glitchy piece of crap but it is just as fun to play. You get to see cool explosions alot and there are a ton of targets to take out in every mission. Just dont try to view the replays hehehe, thats how i froze it. I'd get Heatseeker over any of the ace combats. Heatseeker doesnt have a story either and its stupid that they even try in those games but there is so much carnage its just to fun.
Get 4 or 5, they're both Greatest Hits so they're $20 or less. I'm pretty sure you can find a new copy of 5, but I have my doubts on finding a new copy of 4.
AC 2,4,5 are worth playing for everyone. Ace Combat 1- aka. Air Combat is for fans only. Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere is for hardcore addicts only. The US/EU version was ripped from whole storyline which was in japanese version. It dosen't make sense. First you are fighting with group A, in next mission you are fighting against group A. And you can't tell why. I'm now trying to get A's in all missions. After that the game is landing in my deepest drawer.
