I was just watching a DVD and I heard this horrible clicking noise coming from the disk drive.  The DVD stopped playing, so I reset the console and whenever the PS2 tries to read a disk I get this horrible sound like the motor is really struggling (it kind of sounds like revving up a car) as well as this clicking sound.   However, I never get a disk read error. It stays on the "reading disk" screen.  Do you think I'll have to open the PS2 up to fix the problem?

I had this very same thing happen about 3 weeks ago. I took mine apart and there was just nothing to be done. So I bought one ot the new slimline ones because I sure as heck can't afford a PS3 yet. A refurbished PS2 was like $20 bucks cheaper than a new one, so I figured the new one was worth it. I finally got that 2MB worth of DVD drivers off of my memory card! Built in ethernet and IR sensor for the DVD remote. I'm very happy.

That sucks man, but your PS2 is dead. At least you got six strong years out of it.

I'm a student so unfortunately I can't afford to buy a new one :( I've looked at sites that tell you how to move the laser closer/further away from the disk to get it to read again, so I think I'll try that. I still can't believe it's broken though. My 360 stopped working a month ago as well when it was just out of warrantee :( Ack.

You don't have to buy a new one.  My PS2 has done that practically since I bought it.  It just doesn't read some discs very well.  I then do one of two things: wait for it to accept the disc (which it will eventually do most of the time), or give up and decide to watch something else.  It's a bummer, I realize, but you don't have to buy a new one.  Frankly, I can't believe all the people that automatically did that without trying a little harder to figure out whether it's a legitimate problem or not.

Read the info on the stickied thread about DRE. Detailed info and links to websites can be found there. If cleaning the laser, adjusting the height of it doesn't fix it there's still an option. Take the laser off the bars (you don't have to detach it), flip it upside down to get to the potentio meters. They look like screws. Turn those ever so slightly to increase the voltage. Check out the thread, you might also want to check out I think it's page 5 or 6 of that thread and look for my post. I included two great websites.
