Does anyone know if Anima from FFX was based on any sort of mythological creature or something? I've seen something similar in the inside cover of Metallica's "St. Anger" album (ugh), and I feel like I've seen it somewhere else, but I can't put my finger on it.

It was used as a tatoo in the movie Gothika (not the Anima from FF but an Anima Christian figure). It's a religious thing as far as I know, but you can't trust movies nowadays.
