Devil May Cry 3 is definitely a solid, well-paced and well-rounded action game that will certainly give you not only a fair amount of challenge, but a buttload of fun. It's tough to recommend a game in the same realm of DMC3 as being as good or even better, because it's pretty much as good as games like those come.
Mercenaries, if you like the GTA style of gaming, is certainly worth a look. I definitely got my twenty dollars out of Mercenaries, and am staunchly looking forward to the impending sequel. There's plenty to do, and although the game doesn't quite approach the complete "sandbox game" idea, it still has an open-ended and roaming feeling to it. An all around solid title, and for twenty bucks, I can't imagine why anyone would feel disappointed. There are even three characters, each with different pros and cons insofar as gameplay is concerned, so you could also theoretically play through the game with each character, potentially doing some of the missions that you didn't get a chance to previously. Plus it can be quite challenging in parts - always a bonus in my book.
Shadow of the Colossus is a shining example in gaming, for a number of reasons. Primarily, it's entirely unique, which is something in the gaming world today that's so pleasently welcome it's ridiculous. That being said, obviously, there are people for whom Shadow of the Colossus is not for. The game, ultimately, is like a big puzzle game, wherein besting the colossi basically equates to "completing the puzzle." Of course, there are other factors to this - such as even finding the colossi, trying to climb the colossi, etc. - but it's certainly a wonderful game to play at least once. My recommendation would be to at least rent it and play it once. After 7-11 hours, depending on you, you'll have the game beaten. Sure, there's a Hard difficulty, and some unlockables, but since all you can really do in the game is fight the colossi, you may or may not want to even play it again. Still, it's only twenty dollars, and definitely a one of a kind experience in gaming.
Really, in my humble opinion, any of these three choices would be a surefire way to fun. But if you're primarily into shooters and action type games, then I'd probably go for DMC3 first. Also, they have the DMC trilogy out, and it's what, thirty dollars? If you don't already have DMC1/2, I'd suggest that. I mean DMC2 sucks, but at least the first one and third ones are good. :P
