Iown a lot of awesome games. I mostly play action/adventure and platformers, but I am not opposed to trying other genras. For whatever reason, I have never played the many RPG's PS2 has to offer. I'm going to change this. I'm wondering...for someone who is new to RPG's, where is a good place to start? Something I won't get lost in, or something that will introduce me to RPG style games. I've done some research, and lots of games sound good. But the question is....what do recommend for an RPG virgin? Thanks alot.

maybe go for an action rpg first? they are usually simpler and easy to get into
kingdom hearts, star ocean would be good choices
as for typical rpgfinal fantasy X is an obvious choice, but its got a bit more complex system than action rpg's

Even though im not personally a huge fan of this game...you might want to try out Final Fantasy X. Its not very hard, so you can get some rpg experience, and it is very linear (no matter what some may say). I think most RPG veterans will agree with me that this might be a good place to start off...then you can work your way up to games like the Shin Megami Tensei Series.

Another game you might want to try (its an action RPG) is Star ocean: till the end of time. Again its not one of my all time favorites, but its a great place to start off and the story is decent enough.

So if your looking for turn-based combat i would say FFX, and if you want to have real time battles i would say Star Ocean.

i dont think a turn based rpg is a good way to start. You might get turn off easily. Like someone mentioned above, an action rpg is a good way to start.

I'd say go for an action RPG such as Kingdom hearts, Rogue Galaxy, or FFXII. If you want to go turn based FFX or DQ8 would be great games to start with.

Kingdom Hearts and FF12 are good action-oriented RPG's. Okami is also another RPG to start with, though it has moe action-elements, it should help you know some things that go on in RPG's. After your warm-up, get Final Fantasy 10 and Dragon Quest 8.

Probably an action/adventure style RPG would be a good place to start. They are usual prettyeasy to get into, simple controls and at the same time preserve the immersive storylines and quality gameplay as other types of PRG's.

Well for PS2 start with Final Fantasy X or if you can find it Final Fantasy 7. Both have excellent story and you should start with those for now.

I can definitely help you here. In many reviews, Dragon Quest VIII is not recommended for beginners, but I'm not an RPG person and I made it through the game with few problems. If anything, Dragon Quest VIII should be on everyone's "must-have" list. Dragon Quest VIII is actually an amazing choice for a beginner RPG. It's "classic perfection," but doesn't have the pacing problems of games like Final Fantasy. If anything, the mute hero and generic story may not make it as memorable, but the gameplay and graphics are awesome. I highly recommend Dragon Quest VIII as your beginner RPG - It's fun and has plenty to do.

The GS review said it's a hard game but it was actually pretty easy for me (maybe because I'm a veteran of Phantasy Star 2, one of the hardest rpgs ever made)

It depends on what system you have. If you have a DS, then I say start with the two best RPG's ever created. That would be Final Fantasy 4 and Final Fantasy 6. If you just have a PS2 then go for Final Fantasy X, as the story and characters are engaging and the gameplay is very easy to pickup (just ignore Blitzball). I would avoid the Xenosaga series even though the story and characters were great, it was the gameplay that killed it.

If you can play Shin Megami Tensei without problems, you can play any RPG. To the thread creator, I suggest an action RPG, the Tales series is a very good starting spot.

I appreciate everyone's input. A lot of the games you mentioned are on my list to try.It seems RPG's can get pretty involved, and being new to the genra, I obviously should start out with an easier choice so to speak. I agree with some of you that say an "action" RPG seems like a good place to start. Then, I'm sure I will want to play more types after I get the hang of them. Thanks guys.:D

Kingdom Hearts is overrated.

Anyways, you should try getting FFX and Star Ocean: Till the end of time. FFX is more turn based.

I'll recommend Grandia 2. It has a fun battle system, simple customization and a great story. 8)
