The lack of FF12 on that list makes me very sad. :(
Since it's not on the list, DQ8 with DC2 and Persona 3 coming closely behind it.
I pick Final Fantasy X. It was inovative and I see myself every now and then going back to it. Though I own everyRPG you mentioned, and they all kick a#@!
voted for persona 3 since i really love the art of the game (and the whole series) and its gameplay elements.
the game somehow sets itself apart from other rpg's with the different activities during day and night and the implemented kind of sim gameplay. the card system used to create your personas is as good as in previous titles of the series. the story is interesting and the s.link system not only useful to power up your personas but also fun. the sound and music are a welcome change because i honestly can't remember a rpg using that kind of music.
FFX follows right after Persona 3 and i have to admit that it is a great game but with a few drawbacks.
i am currently still playing this game (165+ hours) and spend the last four days leveling, playing blitzball and evading bolts of lightning just to get my solaris weapons. well these are special weapons and i know that you have to make an effort to gain them but there's a limit to it.
playing blitzball for two days straight to finally make use of the solaris weapon for wakka is bad enough, but the minigame is also tiring as hell. after your first match you have absolutely no problem to win. you just sit there, playing and hoping that you will finally get the jupiter sigil.
well that's just my personal opinion but those things keep the story from progressing for to long (in my case).
i haven't finished DQVIII, just bought it a few weeks ago but i somehow lost interest halfway through because the storyline.
will finish it sometime later, but it's definetly not the same league as Persona 3 and FFX although i really like the visuals and sound.
of the five games listed above my number three.
Dark Cloud 2: hm...didn't finish that either but as far as i can remember really well implemented gameplay elements. my number four.
Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant...can't say anything about it since i only played the predecessor.
Shadow Hearts: Covenants all the way! Well, not just Covenants, but the entire Shadow Hearts's series (sadly, there were only 3 games T_T).
Because it was the most unique rpg ps2 ever had, with an interesting storyline and characters, mixing romance, terror and commedy.
ill go with persona that game is unique my second place goes to ffx i only played it a bit and the game got really damaged wen it fall to the floor :( so i cant play it anymore ... talkin about persona 3 i cant stop playing it ! i stop today because i have a headacke! lol

"the cake is alive bitc*!"-- Portal (the game )
Interesting list, however I prefer: #1 FFVII, #2 Xenogears, # Kingdom Hearts.Sokol4ever
Yeah I would have taken any of those over any of the above mentioned (except Persona 3) but it's PS2 only. I don't think KH is one of the greatest RPGs ever though.

Well, I guess I have some good news for you. There's actually four. Koudelka is a prequel to Shadow Hearts and was for the PS.
More long more fun.The short role-playing games from 10 to 20 hours gameplay are not very good.
BUT TOTA is very long and its not BORING like FFX!!!!!
