I think the combat system in FFXII is an improvement in some areas. In others, it got worse. I think FFX had the perfect combat system. FFX's system allowed for increased strategy and not just mindless attackind back and forth.
If you're looking for the difference between your traditional turn-based RPG and FFXII.. its simply that you can move your character around at any time, instead of see then just stand there in a line trading blows with enemies.
Other than that, I really didn't find a problem with XII. I thought it to be one of the best RPGs I've ever played and ranking among the best in series along with IX and VI, but that's just me.
Only thing I would have added was a day/night cycle like DQVIII, in turn making stronger monsters come out at night and/or only during certain times, or other such events.
i think the biggest problem with FFXII was the lack of good characters, and lack of an interesting storydante_123456
Well i´m a huge fan of turn based RPG´s so i´m a lil scared about what to expectTimoTheThug
Honestly, the only difference between the gameplay of your average turn based RPG and FFXII is you can move your character around. Its still turn based, but instead of your character being stationary, you can move him/her around.
Make the mage stay away casting magic, get your warrior in there and behind the enemy to get into some good damage, that sort of thing.
I wouldn't be scared, its still turn based, through and through.. as much as X, IX or VIII is. You just get to move around is all.

I do agree that Vaan must have been a woman at some point in his life. Square Enix should have given him a better character design, you know, one that actually makes him look like a man.

I don't think the soundtrack was that bad. It wasn't as special as Uematsu's work, but it was good. Besides that, I agree with you two.

Besides that, I agree with you two. the sound track wasn't bad, in fact it was probably above average, but when you get used to a certain style of music in over 10 games it just doesn't feel right when it's gone

So if i loved FFIX , would i really enjoy FFXII??
I love it. The only thing that could be improved reallt is the combat. i hate waiting 10secs to hit again. its not real time.
  No collectable card game!

Also the growth system seems weak. I would have enjoyed it more if instead of boring licenses I could use Jobs or Materia or both maybe. The characters all seemed the same - no major differences in stats when unequipped. Quickening attacks are sort of unexciting. I found them long and dull. A personalized assortment of special attacks that occur without changing to a new screen would have been better for each character.

  Also no cardgame.

The most irritating problem is that party members will not avoid traps even when they have Libra active, you have to either manually move each character around them, or cast float on the entire party.
Also, I thought the battle system was really lacking the ability to assign actions for all of your party members without having to exit and re-enter the menu. During many battles I was constantly double tapping x when executing a command so that I could get back to the menu and choose actions for my other characters. Meanwhile, little bits of time were usually lost because the characters were already initiating their gambit commands.
Ideally, I would want to have a switchable mode (mostly for use in boss fights) where all gambits are turned off, and each time a party members action meter fills, the battle automatically pauses and brings up the menu for that character (kind of like in FF Tactics). That way you have full control over all actions being taken, and no time is wasted trying to override gambit actions or having characters stand idle while waiting for commands. Being able to queue actions for party members would also be cool, as opposed to relying on gambits all the time.
All complaints aside though, I thought the game was excellent. Yes, even the plot, (which is not highly regarded to say the least) there is always room for improvement, but even with its flaws this is still probably my favorite RPG on PS2.
