Well you are right that more people = possable bigger profits and more units sold. Money is one of the key motivators of game developers. If they dont bring the money in they dont get to make games.
However. I think the most important thing to a game developer is the tools they use to make a game. HD-dvd/Blu-ray let developers use higher resolution graphics but they also let the game developers make bigger, deeper games. Take Disgaea 2 for instance. Not a graphic power house but they still push the ps2 to its limit. Your stats do max out eventually, you can only hold so many items in your storage, You can only make so many units. If they make a Disgaea 3 for ps3(which i think people have already said they are doing) imagine if all those things got DOUBLED. Imagine if they had twice as many weapon classes and different versions of weapons.
Look at GTA. Imagine if GTA4 had twice as many cars, twice as many weapons, and a total area twice as big.
Thats what game developers truly want above all other things. Look at PC gaming. Developers are changing computer requirements every year.
Its a nice little bonus that they get to charge 60$ or ps3/xbox games.
If sony wasnt so stupid and priced the ps3 at something everyone could afford this wouldnt even be an issue. They are preventing people from buying it and game developers from using it. Alot of game developers arent going to bother wasting money making a game for a system that has only sold 2-3 million units in a country with over 300 million people.
the
It still sells like mad even more than the PS3 and yet support for it is slowly dropping which is strange because theres like 100 million people out there that'll still buy a amazing game for the system. If companies really cared about money soo much then why do they put consoles like the PS3 and the 360 on their top list and PS2 a poor port afterthought as a console of the past? It's not all about graphics to be honest and the PS2 still has another year or 2 of life in it.Grantelicious
firstly developers have to develop for the next gen systems to maintain a good relationship with the likes of sony and microsoft. both microsoft and sony need strong 3rd party support now more than ever so they push developers over to the new hardware. plus games developers love to develop for new hardware as it gives them the chance to really push themselves creatively. an ambitious title like assasins creed is only possible with the processing power the new systems offer.
Rockstar is a ****** sucker because they're not going to make Bully 2. And another thing is this, I think the PS2 has allot of games for it. So making more new ones is kind of hard. The only thing these new systems are getting is tons of Sequels. Like Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear 4, Halo 3, Fable 2, and etc. So these new systems arent all that great.
I completely agree with you.
the PS2 is the most successful console in history, more than 120 million fan base, the console is quite cheap, a huge library of cool and AAA games.
I really wonder why the devs are now working on next-generation titles. I mean, RE5, GTA4, GoW 3, MGS4 should all come to PS2.
it's better for us. better for devs(developing for PS2 is really cheap, plus they will make a lot of money from the huge fan base. )
and what's all next-gen about? better graphics, who cares about that?!
yeah, I don't understand why there are so little games coming out for the PS2, even though it is selling more than the next gen consoles and it has a bigger user base.
