playing the first one is not necessary but it might familiarize you more with the general mechanics of the game. Either way the games are amazing looking and lots of fun.
No need to play the first but I think it's worth it as it's still a good game. However, if you don't like the first don't let that stop you from trying the second as it's a much better game. Improved every facet of the first.
My bro used to have Dark Chronicle, it looked awesome! I can't wait to finally play it myself. I recently got a PS2 so I've got even more games to choose from :)
