My tv can support both the standard video cable and also component cables, will the component cables(sold separately) for the PS2 really make a visual difference in gaming?

If the game is progressive-scan enabled, then yes it does. Otherwise, you simply get the step up from using a better cable: here's the order in terms of picture quality:

HDMI > Component > S-Video > Composite > RF.

However, only HDMI and Component cables are capable of presenting 480p or higher.

Yes, I got the HD AV component cable and the diffrence was remarkable on my HDTV. All my games look 10X sharper, it's amazing what wonders this cable will do if you have an HDTV.

I using the Sony component cables and currently playing PERSONA 3. The game does no have to support progressive scan in order to really bring out picture quality and clarity. P3 looks amazing. Im playing on a Sammy 19 inch TV / Monitor combo set up.

RGB cables are better to use with the PS2 because it was actually designed with them in mind, seeing as how it is an option in the menu to switch between RGB and Composite
