I'v been getting alot of crap about Sony systems breaking down alot. I dont know what there talking about my original Playstation(not PSOne) and my original PS2 still work like there NEW, hell all my friend's PS2s work just as good. Are my friends and I lucky or are these guys full of BS?
Well the alignment thing with the lens was true for some initial product sku's...
I worked for EB when I was in high school and the PS2 I bought on release night still works and plays dvd's to this day (I know I'm shocked too). For that matter so does my first gen PS1 that was mod'ed to play imports. As far as I can tell if you treat a sony product well (keep it ventilated and dust free and don't mistreat it physically) it should outlast most consoles out there.
I don't think its bs that some units are defective... or break down over time, but thats true of any mass production appliance or technology.
I've had my PS2 since 2 months after the launch. I don't play it anymore though. I use my PS3 to play PS2 games now. My dad uses my PS2 as a DVD player now. It works very well.

as amatter of fact the only consoles me or my friends have had problems with are xbox(dodged up motherboard), dreamcast(just stopped working) and DS(touch screen not working)
my ps2 that i've had since like 2002 still works good. Not great, but good. It always plays new games and all dvds, but it has issues playing old games like NHL hitz2002, Virtua Fighter4, and Twisted Metal Black (ya know games that are CD-Rom not DVD-rom). since i rarely play the old games, I dont think I'll be likely to buy a slim PS2 anytime soon.
got my first ps2 xmas of 2001, started havein trouble in 2003, and it completely went in 2004, got me next when in late 2004, and used it till xmas 2006 when i got my ps3, and then finally sold the ps2 in feb 2007 for a second ps3 controller
my PS2 runs like a charm and it has been through many gaming all nighters. Sony makes good quality systems. All my friends PS2s and Ps1s all work fine except for one of my friends whos ps1 broke after 4 years because his little brother got pissed and broke it the little bastard but oh well besides that none have broken by themselves that i know of.
My PS2 still works like a charm, I bought it a month after it launched in the UK like 5 years ago. never had a problem with it. Great little console. Still got FF12 to finish :)
hmmm...i belive I got mine in 2001? and its till working fine, but alot of my friends say theirs is dead or on its last legs and are switching to the slimy wimmy
I got a PS2 2 years after launch and about 6 months ago it refused to read discs from then on. I have a launch xbox which works fine, but makes a funny noise for about 20 seconds (most of the time) when I start it. (I think its the fan) Never had any problems with gamecube. My dreamcast kept randomly reseting, but I found a guide online, opened up the dreamcast, and fixed the problem. I've have a sega saturn for about 4 years and its still going. My 14 year old 3DO still works perfectly, but doesn't get used very much anymore. That sums up the history of my cd based console experience.
ive had my ps2 for 5 years now and it still wprks perfectly, bout 3 months a go the lens wouldnt read anything like most people have problems with but all u gotta do is get a cotton bud and gently wipe the lens, it really works coz i aint had a problem since! easy! :D
Yeah, I've had my PS2 since 2001 and it still works perfectly. So does my PS1. Then again, I've never really had a console break on me. Even my Turbografx still works just fine--as a matter of fact, I have the TurboExpress on my desk next to my DS right now, heh.
I've had 2 Ps2's and both have stopped working. i had both fixed about a year ago and they are still playing like new. it seems if you stand the system on it's side for a long time it makes the laser in the reader burn out or thats what i was told. Hope this helps.
My PS2 is from 2003 and it's still alive and kicking... had to re-align the laser once and had some difficulty reading DVD+R a couple of times... besides that it's still good to go...
From time to time I open it to remove the dust... it makes a lot of difference
I thank God everyday that my original bulked fat or whatever they call it still purrss like a kitten everytime i turn it on, still works good had it for almost 7 years now i think or 6 i forgot sorry
Mine works too! The only problem is that it stopped playing Grand Turismo 4... It plays all other games perfectly but it doesn't load gt4. I may open it and strengthen the laser's power, it's one bolt only. I assume it won't play god of war as well. It'll probably have trouble with the dl dvds
