Playing the previous GU games isn't required but it does help a lot with the backstory and there are a lot of really good moments in the first 2 GU games. If you haven't already played them I really recommend playing the original .hack games.
I agree with addictedtochaos. you really want to get your hands on the first GUs you will really enjoy them, plus i dont know about you but i dont care for long itroductions into games from previous games just to get you up to speed on whats happening.
