Ive been playing DQVIII for 40 hours now and i just beat "him" and made my way to arcadia and am about to continue up north to find some guys lol

Anyway there have been things that frustrate me about this game and things i enjoy alot. First of all some random battles just wear me out and are tougher than bosses. Also Jessica is ridiculously weak and really ticks me off...especially at this part of the game if you get what i mean :P

What i do like though of course is the "old school" feel to it and the story is getting intersting.

Just felt like sharing my thoughts and would like feedback :)

the goods:

characters are fun

the environment is relaxing

the musics are nice and relaxing

enemy designs ( i mean the most, not all ) are nice and their dancing like animations in battles looks funny

monster arena

long game

the ending is fun, even though its so predictable

there is alchemy to make the best items

the difficulty is good

the voices for all characteres are totally different and funny

the art is Akira Toriyama's, its nice if you are new

the bads:

even the story is old school so it becomes uninteresting, common

some musics are enough to kill all good points of musics -beware

the art is Akira Toriyama's, its all the same if you saw his different works

skills are not explained well so you choose without knowing anything and to not waste more time you go with it even you learn your choice is not so good

the alchemy pot takes ALOT of time to make something

random encounters are so often make the game boring and if you are in a new area, your holy water mostly dont work because it works for only lower level creatures.

the game's hardship comes from "limited item usage" ( limited restore points, etc ) so it makes pain instead of enjoyment. boss battles are all about endurance, they are easy but so long, so they make normal battles look more enjoyable.

--about difficulty-- if the game would allow you to use your skills, items more freely it would become more enjoyable. to make it harder the game limits you, or tries to do it but when you limit yourself ( forced by the game ) the game becomes easy. so hardship should not come from limiting, it should come from hard enemies. the best example is grandia3, especially the last boss. because even you have everything ( though my level was low ), that last boss battle is hard and only your strategy decides for you to win or not. so it was so much fun --

for me, the game started very nice but then it became so boring. i played monster arena alot to distract myself but it ended so soon. i beat the game ( with the second ending, that requires first ending to see) at around 83 hours. with the second ending i thought i had fun with the game at last, but honestly i find this game pretty boring even its a great game. 8.0 ?

I loved the game, the only thing I didn't like was how long it takes for your characters to level up, the monsters get stronger than you faster, and it takes so much time to get gold when the items cost so much.

I enjoyed playing this game, plenty of things to do, huge world where you can go anywhere in the horizon, I found that very appealing. My main gripe is the spikes in difficulty between one area and the next, it takes level grinding to the extreme. Alchemy pot takes more time than the item is worth on many occasions, I was hoping there is some speed upgrade somewhere down the line but none. Overall I think I had a very positive experience with this game with the exception of the things I said above, and the weak ending, though thats expected coming from an old school JRPG.

Twin Dragon Lash is great.

As for me, I loved the game spending over 110 hours on it so far. The only problem I had with it is Prince Charmless.

I know about the Dragovian Trials but what I meant was part of the plot progression type upgrade, not after the game is finished. Same way you moved from 2 to 3 ingredients.

I see what you mean. Yeah alchemy pot was kinda frustrating before the Dragovian Trials. I spend a couple of hours making equipment to prepare for certain bosses.

yea when i went to the reviews section i saw your review, i think i remember your avatar :P I kinda disagree with it but then again its all opinion, but to give a game a 1.7 you must really hate it....i mean 1.7 is barely even a game :?

I enjoyed DQVIII a lot. It has good combat, an interesting enough story, and the old-school feel is great. The game / story isnt perfect though. Right now, I find the combat boring and the story boring as well. I am the part where
You fight dhoulmagus in the dark ruins
. I just dont want to play it anymore, and i force myself to play so that i can see the ending.

I really like the game a lot. I never had problems with the time the alchemy pot takes, I like the music, I think the story is fine and I like the battles, I found I level quicky and I like the 'difficulty'. Some of the bosses are hard ('him', for example), but I think this game is one of the better RPG's I have played.

I enjoyed that game. The game does not let you mindlessly win random battles. Even some of those require you to pay attention.

Jessica's voice actor Emma Ferguson is much hotter than Yuna's Hedy Burress. In voice and looks.

Though both of them have a connection in working with Hugh Laurie who is totally awesome.

I enjoyed the game and it was a refreshing update the the past 2-D sprite games. I did not find the game hard at all though. I thought the story was weak at times but overall it was a great game.....the best RPG on the PS2? No but it still ranks really high on my list.

I don't want to say I despise DQ 8, but I do strongly dislike it. The graphics look like something ripped out of an N64 game, and the characters and story are so generic and cliche'd it makes me want to cry. Oh, and don't get me started on the games dialogue. Who were they aiming this towards? 12 year olds? It reads like a bad childrens book. To top it off it doesn't have the DQ feel or Enix flavor. It has the Square/FF feel and Square flavor. If I want something Square I will pick up Final Fantasy since it and all Square games feel and play the same. Ever since Square and Enix "merged" Enix has been dead. As a result none of the old Enix franchises that have been continued on since then have felt the same. I've had a theory regarding DQ 8 and that is that Square only released it to kill the Dragon Quest franchise, but given that it's DQ and that it's coming from Square it was an unfounded success, despite the fact that it's dog doo. Oh, and that demo that was packed in the American release helped things too. I know plenty of people that purchased it just for that.

The only positive change that I was able to see in DQ 8 was the customization it offered to your characters. However, this was really a mixed blessing and a double edged sword, because you most likely picked something that wasn't so good before you knew what you were doing, and since it takes so long to level a new area you just stick with what you have already chosen even if it was a bad choice.

Now I know this post will upset a lot of you, but it's just how I feel regarding the game. Also, understand that I have been a Dragon Quest fan since the franchises beginning. I have played every single installment in the series and can tell you that the best one was never even released over here. That is of course DQ 6 from back on the Super Famicom aka SNES. If you're a long time fan of the franchise like me you know it has a different flavor from Final Fantasy and the rest of the RPG's out there. It is a harder, drier, more subltler rewarding flavor, which Dragon Quest 8 lacks and doesn't hold a candle to in comparrison to the games in the series that came before it.

Ah come on, Prince Charmless is awesome. Ok he isn't a "likeable" character but he is the character I love to hate.

As for the game I love the old-school feel, however the random encounters are too often and the the entire game gets boring after 40 hours or so.

I normally hate RPG's, but this one was different. It had way more stuff for you to do like gamble and fight with monsters. I played till half way then got rid of it cause it got to hard. But still, great game.

The good

-Music and Monsters remind you of older DQ games

The bad

-Character Design is cartoony and idiotic andblows
-Combat system is extremely outdated and blows

The whole thing is just boring crap. I havent enjoyed a DQ since i played them on NES. They have failed miserably to keep up with game advancement and technology. Hello this is 2000+ and your combat and storytelling still play likeweare in the 1980's!! Action based combat like KH2, DC2, .hack GU, okami, and all the rest are one of TWO ways you can go with rpg's. If your not going to make the game action based then it better be tactical. Just plain menu driven rpg's are CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would say the good is that it has that old school feel and the adventuring is grand. The only bad that frustrated me was the bland turn-based battles. The battle system is as turn-based as it gets in DQ.

I gave it something in the 5s, because even though the beautiful graphics and eviroments, many things on its are not good enough. An example would be enemies. Bubbles shouldnt kick butts in any game, bubbles are what you train with until lvl 5, not until lvl30+. What made me left the game was the terrible designs of the enemies. I couldt withstand them.

Hinata i saw your review for Dragon quest 8

and its really unfair! 1.7?!

this game has an average score of 9/10.

many sites gave it 10/10.

the graphics are simply amazing, among the best on the ps2 and the game-play is really good.

the music in dragon quest are the best in any rpg game.

u gave the sound 2/10.if u can give a game with such amazing music 2/10 for the sound then

it just says it all.

i have no idea why u hate the game so much but the music are amazing for a fact.

i personally wait much more to the new dragon quest game and not final fantasy.

Dragon quest is the most successful rpg in japan and after playing Dragon quest 8

i can understand why.

generation- yea i see where your coming from the music does have pretty high production values. I gave it a 8 overall. 8 for every single catagory. The sound is great but the music got repetative and the voice acting varied. The graphics were good but the cutscenes were lacking and like Kenshin says the enemies had ridiculous designs. The gameplay was good until the random battles just started to get way too hard, and IMO the game dragged on a bit too much. But seriously, after finishing it today, i have to say that the so called "Lord of Darkness" looks like the stupidest boss i have ever seen in a game. Dhoulmagus was more fitting to be the real boss.

Yes i did mention the music since i am musician,

and i always notice in a game if the music is good or not.

and after playing many rpg games, as a musician i can tell u

that Dragon quest 8 music is amazing.

best music in rpg I've heard.

and like u said the production of the music and all the other aspects of the game is top-notch

yeah -generation- I absolutely agree with your opinion..although I am not a musician all I can say is that the music and soundtrack for DQ8 is simply amazing, and in my opinion, unrivalled!Koichi Sugiyama is indeed very talented..In fact, this game's music is the only one that I can still hum spontaneously even though I've already played it through two years ago..yeah it's old school, and random battles get annoying sometimes, but I never face any difficulties during my first gameplay..the only thing that is difficult for me is to beat the dragon(5/6 different forms)...man,that battle is the pain in the ass..I give up after trying several times..anyway,you guys are pretty harsh on saying that this game sucks...It does have a steady fan-base and everything it has to offer is excellent. In fact,I seriously think that the first next gen console which will have DQ 9 EXCLUSIVELY is going to be the one I invest in!

-blue dragon seems pretty decent though........-

u gave the sound 2/10.if u can give a game with such amazing music 2/10 for the sound then

it just says it all.

i have no idea why u hate the game so much but the music are amazing for a fact.

i personally wait much more to the new dragon quest game and not final fantasy.

Dragon quest is the most successful rpg in japan and after playing Dragon quest 8

i can understand why.

[QUOTE="finalfan789" The graphics were good but the cutscenes were lacking and like Kenshin says the enemies had ridiculous designs.

Am I the only one who liked the enemy designs?

probably. Im all for imaginative character design but i mean, how many times are u gonna fight the same weak looking bads guys...with different colors?? Different colors = more powerful?? Ok...i guess........and "The Lord of Darkness" was the corniest final boss of any game i have ever seen

I seriously think that the first next gen console which will have DQ 9 EXCLUSIVELY is going to be the one I invest in!

weijie86

well then i guess you should get a DS. DQIX is exclusively for teh Nintendo DS

Yes i saw your review.

u just wrote 2 lines about the graphics,

saying that the drawings looks like they were done in 2 minutes.

even if u hate the game u can't say something like that because u can tell

there has been a lot of work on the graphics, there is a lot of attention to details

and the game is very impressive graphically overall.

the game graphics don't look like they were done in 2 minutes.

u said the game is slow.i didn't notice that.

and u didn't write anything about the music.

if u hate the game and think it's bad that's your right but your review didn't explain many things

I think this game was good but constant time doing boring jobs and walking back and forth over vast landscapes infested by monsters and on top of that having to level up constantly and still struggling with battles. Besides this, new side quests and upbeat music and scenery made it a fun game overall, 8.4
