Mine started having trouble with this recently. Just wash the disk off real good, and that usually works. But, for me, I have to clean Final Fantasy Tactics every time I pop it in the PS2.

Ive got a 2001 PS 2. It does have trouble playing DL games. My GoW 2 got freezed once and I know it was because of it. But has never happened again. It does have trouble with DL and its been an old problem too. If Im not mistaken, one of the first DL was San Andreas and it had its problems. But the console will read the game so dont worry about that.
my old Ps2 from like 2002 (maybe it was late 01) still works fine. It just has trouble playing OLD games like Virtua Fighter 4, Twisted Metal, and other games that dont use DVD. Mine plays the new games just fine. Just rented God of War 2. Ran perfect. Rarely even said "loading"
