I think that warriors, godfather, mercenaries and msg3 snake eater are pretty good free roamers.

also driver 3 and scarfaceare pretty good free roam games aswell.

SotC is an open world you can roam around in for as long as you'd like. No time limits or anything forcing you to kill the Colossi.

i thought driver parallel lines was a good free roam. The gimick was original, and the music was great. The map was huge. the thing that hurt the game for me was the crappy controls on driving. it was stiff and horrible.
