All the posts i saw were too old, so i thought i may ask. I've seen mixed reviews of this game, people saying its the best, others saying its not much fun. I was just wondering, from those who have played it, is it a buy, a wait, a rent, or a dump?
I was very disappointed with this game. The story is only moderately interesting, the characters are boring with the exception of Balthier and Basch and the battle system is horrible.
It's a really long game... I'm over 40 hours into the game and I checked the guides to realize I'm only halfway through the game. I like the sidequests and monster hunts, but this game feels less like a Final Fantasy game, and more like a back to back dungeon crawler.
The game would have been great as an MMO but it falls pretty short as a FF game. The storyline sucked so did the repetitive battle system and the characters including the useless Espers. Final Fantasy XÂ is way better than this and at least X has a great amount of CG-cutscenes wich I think is a must for a Final Fantasy game.
Espers were decent though I admit they aren't as powerful as you would expect and it does have a decent amount of cutscenes. But it is unfair for us to expect that Square will shell out another FFX or FFVII in every Final Fantasy. The game would have been great as an MMO but it falls pretty short as a FF game. Oh yeah like CGs and cutscenes are the things that make the FF games great. . . Repetitive, what game isn't repetitive? In X, you get into random battles ever so often and do the same thing. How do you get stronger in the game? By doing the same thing over and over, get into battle and kill monsters. The series has to change. I thought X's changes had good but certainly had a lot of bad. The game is extremely linear and will only open towards the end when you can finally travel about. Blitzball is a nice change pace every now and then, only if you finally got used to it. The emphasis on story telling and cutscenes would be better, if the story is good in the first place, which in the case of X, is a stupid and lame doom story with a retarded love story. Part XII's automiatically better than X's thanks to its more mature tale of political struggle. I don't want to know more about Vaan and Penelo as their backstories would definitely look retarded (see their upcoming DS game). The backstories of Basch and Balthier is all I need. The game would have been great as an MMO but it falls pretty short as a FF game. It's a good game, though I expected a little more from Final Fantasy in terms of story. It felt somewhat bland.
But, like someone said, you can't expect that every Final Fantasy will be like 6 or 7 (or wichever is your favorite).
It's not the best in the series but it's far from being a bad game, it's worth buying it. (after all, you'll probably expend more money finishing a rental than aquiring a copy...)
I'm not going to lie. X bored the living hell out of me. TBS usually do, but not to this level, and the story was not good enough to justify continuous playing. I had about ten hours on it before I threw my hands up in disgust. I mean, there's only so much I can take, but random battles and enemies that don't move bug the crap out of me. I want a living breathing enviroment. I want an enemy that can chase me if I chose to run away. I don't want to just sit around and wait for my turn. There's only so many times I can watch the complete and total moron that is Tidus jump foward and use the same damn sword attack for every swing. And then....I have to hear him speak in a cutscene every five minutes. It really takes me out of the game. I like the way XII did it. Less frequent cutscenes that are longer, so you get a nice breake instead of a bunch of annoying intrusions. Someone said it was repetitive. LMAO! Regular TBS like FFX are the epitome of repetitive! Its random battle. Attack. At least with FFXII, you have a real struggle to partake in. And you CAN control what each character does. All you have to do is hit X, scroll over ot them and tell them what thier next action should be, or *gasp* change the gambits!
It just appears the increased complexity and realisme just doesn't do it for some people.
On a side note, what's the deal with Vaan? He just stands there...looking girly...That's the best part, he just stands there. Vaan is perhaps the best tagalong on an JRPG since the JRPG was born. Here's the deal, character development on most Japanese RPGs tend to piss the hell out of me. Combine their retarded story with their ambigous looks, you have yourself something full of cliches and predictability. I like how you almost get nothing out of these characters, it's really fantastic. The sequel for the DS is bound to go fruit salad or Kids PBS in terms of story so play that if you want to know more about them. I don't, that's why I'm not getting it.
