All the posts i saw were too old, so i thought i may ask. I've seen mixed reviews of this game, people saying its the best, others saying its not much fun. I was just wondering, from those who have played it, is it a buy, a wait, a rent, or a dump?

No doubt the game is very good as you'd expect, but it didn't really capture me greatly in the storyline, which is what I like best in RPG's. Also the character interaction or lack of was lame, I have no idea why Vaan was the main character, he didn't much at all, I think Balthier should've been really. Besides that it's a great game. Buy if you're a RPG fan else rent it.

I was very disappointed with this game. The story is only moderately interesting, the characters are boring with the exception of Balthier and Basch and the battle system is horrible.

this game owns. there's so much to do and explore besides the story mode. if u want to beat all the hunts & all the other side quests and optional boss hunt club then it'll take well over 150 hrs. i'm only at 100 some hrs and only gone thru 20 some hunts.

It's a really long game... I'm over 40 hours into the game and I checked the guides to realize I'm only halfway through the game. I like the sidequests and monster hunts, but this game feels less like a Final Fantasy game, and more like a back to back dungeon crawler.

I'm not really a fan of the battle system.

I don't like gambits at all.

it's not too bad, though

The most beautiful looking PS2 game out right now. Extremely fun to play once you pick up the new fighting system.

addictive. It takes some elements from ffxi too the way you actually have to tank some monsters while mages nuke. though i wish they had kept the original summons and Vaan should've had a much bigger role if he was main char but no serious gripes about the story either.

My thoughts right now, I'm 96 hours in the game and all my characters are at level 61. I'm at the game's threshold where I can finish the game easily or spend an extra 40-50 hours on leveling them up to the max, finish all the side quests, and obtaining the best weapons in the entire game. I'll go for the harder path.

It's pretty good. Most of the people who don't like it becuase of the new battle system never really gave it a chance, but once you get used to it you'll like it fine.

Also the game is very long so you'll be enjoying for a long time.

The game would have been great as an MMO but it falls pretty short as a FF game. The storyline sucked so did the repetitive battle system and the characters including the useless Espers. Final Fantasy X is way better than this and at least X has a great amount of CG-cutscenes wich I think is a must for a Final Fantasy game.

Espers were decent though I admit they aren't as powerful as you would expect and it does have a decent amount of cutscenes. But it is unfair for us to expect that Square will shell out another FFX or FFVII in every Final Fantasy.

Oh yeah like CGs and cutscenes are the things that make the FF games great. . . Repetitive, what game isn't repetitive? In X, you get into random battles ever so often and do the same thing. How do you get stronger in the game? By doing the same thing over and over, get into battle and kill monsters. The series has to change. I thought X's changes had good but certainly had a lot of bad. The game is extremely linear and will only open towards the end when you can finally travel about. Blitzball is a nice change pace every now and then, only if you finally got used to it. The emphasis on story telling and cutscenes would be better, if the story is good in the first place, which in the case of X, is a stupid and lame doom story with a retarded love story. Part XII's automiatically better than X's thanks to its more mature tale of political struggle. I don't want to know more about Vaan and Penelo as their backstories would definitely look retarded (see their upcoming DS game). The backstories of Basch and Balthier is all I need.

I think FFXII is one of the best of the series and rates up there with the SNES FF games of old. It was a nice change to the series and I hope they do more games like this one again.

[Just for the record, before reading the following, uderstand I played the game for about 40-some hours before I wrote this] The gambit system basically allows you to set up a macro for your party so that you don't have to choose the same options from a pull down menu over and over and over.... My problem with 12 was that if I did turn the gambits off, the action was either too constant for me to make individual choices per character (if the gambits are off, the game doesn't prompt you to attack), or if I had the gambits on I felt they took the experience and control of my party out of my hands. Imagine a racing game with auto steer and auto break; would you want to play that? Or a first person shooter with auto jump and auto aim/fire -- doesn't sound like much fun to me. I set my gambits to 1) Attack party leader's target, 2)attack nearest foe, and I always had one party member set up to heal first, then attack second. Once I set my gambits like this, I never really had to do much other than heal my party manually during boss fights (because they were so fast paced). I still can't think of a solution in my mind that would allow the number of real-time encounters but wouldn't leave the player basically steering the party leader (although Rouge Galaxy looks like a step in the right direction). Like I said I felt like I was just steering the game, not playing it. And just for the record, I think it was really cool of Square to try something new -- I'm not faulting that -- my hesitance rests with the execution. On the other hand I really liked the creatures you fought, the music and the way it brought out the flavor of the environments without beating you over the head with a melodramatic melody line that seems out of place, I liked the licence board and obviously the visuals were well done. And there was something intangibly addictive about it, I just couldn't shake the feeling I was steering the game, not playing it.

some people like it. others think its a huge dissapointment. this was the first rpg i ever played so i didnt have anything to compare it too. i know that i got sucked into the game pretty good. i think i sort of  got lost in the story but i really liked the game play and the "quickenings" are way to cool for school. ive heard that the battle system in 12 is shakey but i dont know why people would say that. once you level up high enough you dont even have to play the game anymore. which i thought was cool. i liked how the game wasnt linear at all, in most parts of the game you can travel anywhere in the world. i suggest that if you arent a huge fan boy of final fantasy that you should buy this game. i got the collectors edition with the bonus dvd and metal case for 50 bucks. 80 hours well spent if you ask me....

It is worth buying... I actually bought my copy used for 10 bucks less at EBgames. I havent took a rpg game this seriously in playing it, since FF7. The other FF since that and prior to this one didnt really catch my interest. This game is really well done, with acting in places that sounds like its out of a quality movie. Like the old king , he is performed well, for one. The game just has a high quality thing to it, like it was shot as this epic film. Its fun too, and there enuff kwaii, cute stuff, like the moogles and some of the characters and side missions. Yet , it can be and is quit a strong serious game. Gone is the dated 'wondering around and oops...random battle , the screened twirls into a haze'...no the battling is more fun, more INVOLVING, and still has battle menus...trust me, you wont get bored when youre trying to level up characters. It wont be such a drudge. You can move the camera around in the midst of battle, and move your guy too, its the best of REAL TIME action mixed with the best of TURNED BASED, mixed all together...so its not a depature of whats been tried and true for typical rpg battle, but it elaborates on it i guess you could say, and makes it more interesting. Youll see your enemys around you, and you can choose to creep around a rock to avoid them, but if they see ya, then youd better run..cuz its more realistic now. And i think some enemies even run away from you cuz they become scared lol. So its pretty cool. Creatures even pop up outta nowhere....Thats pretty random, trust me, and they attack. And you can assign comands (called Gambits) that place priority on actions like keeping your hard working group healthy and kicking. Its got some strategy, but its not bland, nor confusing. It didnt take me long to learn bout stuff. Though at first you might be overwhelmed, DONT WORRY. Youll understand, its quit simple and fun with all the LICENSES, GAMBITS and something VERY COOL called MIST and ESPERS. Lets just say its a cross between the old LIMIT BREAK and SUMMONING ;) It has action, romance, intrigue, suspense, and an inspiring musical score, music that can be fun too. And im still in the early stages of the game haha. This game is worth buying...its definatly well done...youll like the characters. And the Fran rabbit lady character is so different and cool. And the villians are many and awesome looking, involved in political darkness and corruption. A must buy.

No doube it's a very good name and a nice ending for the series on PS2 platform. However, I'm not used to the battle system yet. IMO, XII is much much better than X.

I got this game thinking it was going to be great. I am a fan of all final fantasies (i am pretty much obsessed with them) and i have to say this one isnt bad but i found myself getting bored pretty easily.  After i first got it, i played it a lot then my playing time slowly decreased as i went on.  I think the battle system sorta makes it not as fun.  And the story didnt appeal to me much.  In the end, i think either you love this game or you dont.  And i didnt, i have stopped playing it entirely just becuz i bore myself whenever i do.

It is indeed a great Final Fantasy, but I dont know, there is something missing, the game didnt capture me as many other FF games did, but its absolutely worth playing, maybe you will find that something that I cant find in this game xP.

It's a good game, though I expected a little more from Final Fantasy in terms of story. It felt somewhat bland.

But, like someone said, you can't expect that every Final Fantasy will be like 6 or 7 (or wichever is your favorite).

It's not the best in the series but it's far from being a bad game, it's worth buying it. (after all, you'll probably expend more money finishing a rental than aquiring a copy...)

Hey, I think (but maybe I'm wrong) that we should also mention our age too. I played FFXII over 100h and still have a great amount of things to do! When I first started the game I also had bad thoughts. But after 2h and having learnt the ways of the battle system I thought "this is the best gameplay ever in FF series". So I 'm not gonna say the same things that others mentioned before me. Why I refferd the age. For some reason I think that younger gamers would like a love story better than a political one for the simple reason they don't care yet about politics. I 'm 25 and liked FFXII. What about you and your likes?

I'm not going to lie. X bored the living hell out of me. TBS usually do, but not to this level, and the story was not good enough to justify continuous playing. I had about ten hours on it before I threw my hands up in disgust. I mean, there's only so much  I can take, but random battles and enemies that don't move bug the crap out of me. I want a living breathing enviroment. I want an enemy that can chase me if I chose to run away. I don't want to just sit around and wait for my turn. There's only so many times I can watch the complete and total moron that is Tidus jump foward and use the same damn sword attack for every swing. And then....I have to hear him speak in a cutscene every five minutes. It really takes me out of the game. I like the way XII did it. Less frequent cutscenes that are longer, so you get a nice breake instead of a bunch of annoying intrusions. Someone said it was repetitive. LMAO! Regular TBS like FFX are the epitome of repetitive! Its random battle. Attack. At least with FFXII, you have a real struggle to partake in. And you CAN control what each character does. All you have to do is hit X, scroll over ot them and tell them what thier next action should be, or *gasp* change the gambits!

It just appears the increased complexity and realisme just doesn't do it for some people.

I applaud the FF team for having the balls to drastically change the formula and gameflow of one of the most succesful, highly revered and anticipated game series. NO MORE RANDOM BATTLES! I love it. I feel if you really want to appreciate this game, you've got to take it slow, much moreso than other FF games. Much more care was put into the little things here, and I think if you just rush into story-progressing quests without taking the time to absorb the circumstances surrounding them or the living, breathing environment, you'll cheat yourself out of an ambient experience which obviously has more exquisite planning and production design than any other in the series. In this case it wasn't my "need to know" that kept me playing all hours of the night, like in say FFVII, FFVIII, or FFX. In this case it was the need to simply play, and revisit Ivalice.

It is a great game, however from what you would expect of a Final Fantasy plot standard it's not that great. But of course, being a Final Fantasy it's still one of the best RPGs around. I recommend it, just don't have enourmous expectations.

On a side note, what's the deal with Vaan? He just stands there...looking girly...

That's the best part, he just stands there. Vaan is perhaps the best tagalong on an JRPG since the JRPG was born. Here's the deal, character development on most Japanese RPGs tend to piss the hell out of me. Combine their retarded story with their ambigous looks, you have yourself something full of cliches and predictability. I like how you almost get nothing out of these characters, it's really fantastic. The sequel for the DS is bound to go fruit salad or Kids PBS in terms of story so play that if you want to know more about them. I don't, that's why I'm not getting it.
