Go for Final Fantasy VII (PSone) first...BEST GAME EVER MADE! Then try FF8, FF9,FFX,etc...

agreed
I've heard that most Final Fantasy games follow a different storyline. Is this true? If not, which game would you recommend to try out first? I don't play many RPG's and I don't really care about graphics. Thanks.grim1813
They all have different storylines (except 10-2, the sequel to 10). I recommend 7 or 9 as a starter. Both great.
I read somewhere a while ago that Square created Final Fantasy 1 as it's final game which is where the title came from, because they could not compete with Enix. And somehow FF1 was a huge hit in Japan, and then they decided to continue the trend to create a "Final" Fantasy and each one was being made as if it was their last game. Which is why each one has a different plot/cast and why they raised the bar so high with each release.
I don't know how true this story is, but it explains the game title and the reason behind each game being a different game with the same name.

For storyline FFVII and VIII are best these two are also quite easy to work in terms of materia and junctioning (it'll make sense when you play them) also the battle systems in FF are turn based (except FFXII)which is relatively nice to handle along with summons.
Start off with VII and if you like that go for VIII as well, like you said your not worried about graphics ;)
Since they all have different storylines and you don't really care about graphics you can start anywhere, as long as you have the means for buying the game or downloading or emulating it... whatever you do, just have fun with it. Each story has it's own uniqueness. have fun with it. oh and if you have at least $50 you can get FFVII on ebay. the only ff to have a growth in price.

I dont know about the junctioning system in VIII being easy to work with. It took me quite some time to get the hang of it but for me it would easily rank as the best system of all FF games. You can customize it to no end and the fact that you can change your attributes makes it seem like you switch classes on the fly.
I would start with FFX
It's has all the good characteristics from previous FFs: great story, easy but at the same time deep battle system, lots of ways to customize your hero's skills, nice graphics, charismatic characters (is there anyone who doesn't love Auron? =D), tons of things to do besides the main story (like monster hunting and blitzball), awesome Overdrive system (based on the Limit system from FF VII), etc...
It's the best choice IMHO, but if you want go play FF VII. It's great too =D
the way i started out was all over the place, 8 then 10 then 7 then 10 -2 then 12 then 6, so it doesn't really matter what you choose first, i think you should start with 7, one of the best ps1 games ever
If you don't care about the graphics, then I advice you not to play final fantasy games because they're high qaulity RPGS with no substance sadly. I began to think like that right after I have played final fantasy 12. I advice you to turn for Atlus for RPG.
If you want to play a decent ff game then play FFX which is the best RPG on the playstation 2 and or FF8 on ps1 which is my personal favourite.
You cant just retrospectively condemn a series as having no substance based on one game. While I agree the plot in FFXII is not Squeenix's best effort I cant say FFVI sucks as a direct result of that, makes no sense! Agreed about turning to Atlus for RPGs, they have become my favourite RPG developer/publisher. Squeenix are becoming rather proficient at being lazy and cranking out remakes, not a good strategy. If you don't care about the graphics, then I advice you not to play final fantasy games because they're high qaulity RPGS with no substance sadly. True but if they continue to make similar games as ff12 although I liked the battle system and I enjoy action oreinted battles more they will lose another fan of the series.

With this I agree wholeheartedly. In terms of scope this probably had more potential than any FF I played, yet they filled it with what I can only describe as the froth on top of the cappuccino. Paper thin characters in some instances, overstretched dungeon design, lots of unfilled potential that left me hanging. Fingers crossed the next one is done well.

Though I don't know what's so secial about crystal stories and I'd rather they make something new than going back to the roots but I'm guessing final fantasy versus which is the "dark side" of ff13 is more promising. Btw I didn't finish ff12 so did I miss something?

I didnt finish it either, started playing Rogue Galaxy then God of War. You know when you feel you have to finish something but its too much of a chore to do so? Something like that... Admittedly FF always got the endings right and their games do feel worthwhile after you beat them so I guess I might just go back and finish it soon enough.
FFXIII is looking very promising indeed and I have no doubt it will handle the new direction of FF differently. The team behind FFXII were given something of a free reign over their design and a few of them had very little experience in FF prior to this game. Granted Tactics Ogre, FF Tactics and Vagrant Story are superb games but they are different to the traditional FF. This leads me to believe FFXII was nothing more than a stopgap to test the waters, all the major people have been working on FFXIII.
I'm a Final Fantasy fan since 1998 so maybe I can help. First off, FF7 was a brilliant game. Everytime I play an RPG I always look back at that game and am reminded of how I still have not experienced the same thing since. The problem is that by now it is dated so the graphics are pretty unbearable. From there, FF8 was remarkable as well, but it suffers from the same problem. If you prefer PS2, then FFX and FFXII are your choices. I haven't gotten too far into 12 so I can't go too much into it but FFX is a masterpiece despite the fact that a lot of the main character's voices are severely annoying (my opinion). If you play 12 then you will be playing something that is very different from any other Final Fantasy.
Oh and yes, they all follow storylines. Most RPG's do.
As a fan of the series since the first one that came out on the NES. I would have to say that you should start with FF4 or FF6, but since those are probably hard to find. Beginning with FFX is a pretty good start. Out of all the series FF4 and FF6 are still my favorite after pretty much running through every last one of them over and over.
Can't say I was particularly thrilled with FF9, FFX-2, and FF12. Still, if you can get over the mini-games, the rats doing the river dance (FF9, oh the horror), the long and boring story lines, and the not so interesting characters. Then you should be able to enjoy these games as well.
