It's been a while since I've played a customizable mech game on the ps2. The only one being S.L.A.I. which SUCKED to me and I had to return it, don't ask why, it just didn't do it for me. Now after seeing some videos in the Armored Core series, it seems I want to play it. Being a new Armored core player, which should I get first? NineBreaker and Nexus seems good, but what are your opinions? The reason I want a Armored Core game is because of the manuverablility. I saw videos of people boosting up shooting, accelerating foreward to hack n slash the enemy, but the most interesting thing to me is strafing+shooting in wide areas. Well heres the point, Which game should I start with? (Options are NineBreaker or Nexus, since the graphics) Are there large open areas to do cool moves? Is the storyline in Nexus good? Or should I not get any Armored Core game and shoot for a different game? (State a different/better one) Thanks.

Wow where to start?? First off the AC series has been going on for a long time. I dont know how many there are exactly but i would imagine somewhere around 5-7+. MOST of them center around taking your mech on missions where you shoot up turd non humanoid robots and in some cases biological beasties. After a mission you get paid per the mission and have to pay for ammo and armor replacement and then you use the money left over to buy new parts and continue on.

Usually in most of the games there is a way to gain extra abilities beyond a normal pilot like the ability to fire back mounted cannons while moving instead of having to kneel, or the ability to overboost. You have to earn these abilities by doing specific things in the game.

Besides the main story which horrably sucks and makes little to no sense, there are usually arena battles so ravens can go 1v1 or more and see who is the best. Climbing the arena ladder will net you more money and unique prizes(and the ammo and armor refills are free). This can be frustrating as the computer AI gets autolock and you have to aim manually, you will also have to make major design changes through the arena because its like rock paper scissors sometimes. Certain designs just get their @$$ kicked by other designs.

The game is alot more fun when you have a friend to play against, even better if you have 2 ps2's, 2 tv's, and 2 copies of the game and a link cable. Make both mechs take a head that has no sensors so nobody can use the radar and its orgasmic as the only way to kill your friend is to seek and destroy although in most stages you start within visual range of each other.

Some weapons take ammo and some use energy. Your energy supply regerates but you also use it to fly and boost. If you run out of energy you have to recharge which takes a few seconds in which time you are reduced to walking and jumping and no energy weapons. So battles are a balance of energy, mobility, and firepower. ammo weapons are usually slow and can be dodged. Missles can be shot down.

Starting at AC 3 they made some major changes to the game and how your mechs move and how you gain special abilities. I think they were for the worse but oh well. I havent got to play the latest ones like Nine Breaker or Last Raven. AC is a fun game if you can get them cheap. I think they are seriously lacking in everything to make them great games though and would never own one unless you have somebody to constantly play with. Vs battles have entire fight replays which are awesome.

Other Recommendations related and unrelated: Front Mission 3-4(ps1-2), CustomRobo(GC/DS), Carnage Heart(ps1), R.A.D.(ps2), Steambot Chronicles(ps2) sucky, MS Saga(ps2), none of the other gundam games, and uhhhh.....I think thats it.

Good luck finding one you enjoy.

Oh about area size.... While on missions you get a mix of tunnels and hallways and big open spaces. You wont usually have giant sphere size battles except in the arenas though. And which one should you start with? I would go back to the ps1 titles honestly even if they did have crappier graphics. Otherwise it doesnt really matter because the storyline suck and they rarely relate to one another.

Hmmm so NineBreaker seems better now. Since NineBreaker is pure arena battle and has no form of currencey whatsoever.
