UGH!! I just bought the game and its already pissing me off. I'm at the first boss, and i've been tying to beat it for 2 hours now. Apparently I'm supposed to drag its head into the big pole by pressing the circle button. I've been doing that FOREVER!!! All that happens is I lose my grip and Kratos falls down. Everyone is going on and on about how easy this guy is. I get him down to half his health..i press the circle button when it tells me to..I press it like a mad man....and Kratos lets go..EVERY TIME....am I doing somethgn wrong? I've tried everything. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
For the hydra, make sure that you killed the two smaller ones, and then you climb up to the big one. use your magic attacks and multiple combos. you have to do the O mini game make sure you press the mini game button as the icon appears. afte about 3 mini games you are on the final one. its O and a few other ones then button mashing alot for O after that you beat it.
thanks for the replies... *sigh* yes, the hydra at the begining of the gme ( pathetic isn't it?) I've killed the first 2 little hydras. The big one is driving me crazy. I know i'm supposed to press the circle button, I KNOW he's supposed to ram his head into the middle pole and break it...but honestly..he JUST DOESN:T. Kratos keeps falling down each and every time..this is after about 30 second of mad button mashing. I've done it about 150 times now with no success.
3 hydras 2 on sides one in the middle start by either one of the sides when you knock out one go on top of the boxes (depending which hydra you knocked down) once on the top of the boxes jump into this big metal platform where there the rope will rip and will fall on top of the hydras head (do the same to other hydra)
Now u finished off 2 of 'em now gow for the big kahuna climb the pig wooden pole the trick on this one is try not to fall when it growls at you and evade when it bites, always do as much combos as possible now once the dydra is knocked down do the combos specified on the screen .....and thats pretty much it dude .....good luck
Make sure that your doing the right thing with the circle button. Are you supposed to be mashing it or simply tap it? If you mash it, and you really cant do it, get a pin, hold it sideways, and rub it back and forth on the circle button.... what I did on metal gear solid, it works perfect, though feels a little cheap.
I'm on the big hydra, i've killed the 2 little ones. I AM mashing the circle button as fast as I can, but every time Kratos falls backwards and lets go. I CAN:T be the only person this is happening to. Am I supposed to mash the buttons fast? Or slow? or what?? I;'ve tried everything. This game is frustrating the hell out of me. I heard its really good which is why I bought it, but i'm so pissed off, I honestly think i'm just gonna sell it off tommorrow and get what I can for it and cut my losses. I've been at this for 3 hours now with no success. My arm is KILLING em from mashing buttons. I'm surprised I'm the only one thats having such problems. Is the rest of the game this irritating?

OMG!!! I just bought that game today and I had the same exact problem!! The big hydra would either keep blowing me off of the pedastal or I would keep accidentally moving off while trying to activate the context-sensitive finishing move. I guess it's a matter of getting used to the controls. Try standing w/o the pole in your way when you start to hit the circle button.
edit: I wasn't sure what to do either so I just kept mashing the button. I hit it like 2 or 3 time to get the chains on him and then after the new icon appeared, I kept mashing it as fast as I could.
Thanks for all the responses. Glad I'm not the only one that had that problem. But for me its a serious problem and still ongoing.. I swear, i started fighting the boss at 11:00...its now after 2!! I just wanna beat the damn thing, it's started to consume me. I tried the pin thing... the problem is that the lag between pausing the game and pressing the damn button makes Kratos fall (seemingly for the 10000 th time.) I can;t believe this, I could have probably leaned a new language by now. Well, anyways, I'm sick of looking at this damn hydra and occasionally getting knocked down by it (which REALLY irritates the hell out of me at this point.) so I'm going to take a break and take one more crack at this tommorrow. Thanks everyone.
One of my friends had a problem with the Hydra minigame.I told her it was a glitch and then she went and replaced the game with a new copy and voila,it started working.She was able to finish mashing ( ) very easily without failing.
I definitely think this is a glitch and you should try replacing the game with a new copy.
You really should not have any problem. Hit him up a few times, press the O button when prompted to, then keep mashin them for a little while and you;ll smash the hydra in to the pole. something is wrong with the disk perhaps.
guys guys guys...its no glitch or controler problem or anything. All u have to do is...hold the condtoller on ur left hand and press the O button with ur right index finger as FAST and CRAZILLY as possible. If this dosent work...MAY THE GODS HAVE PITY ON U.
Ok, to prevent you from falling off the platform, you can block his roars and it will stop you from falling. Then just don't walk off it. As for your button problem, I have no idea. Obviously you want to press it fast. I guess make sure that Kratos puts his feet on the pole after the original button press then start mashing O.
I went through the same thing but after about 5 times Kratos pulled the thing down and impaled it. As for the basics staying on the platform and such you just have to block but no as I recall when the o pops up if you press it it'll start the mini-game. One more thing I don't recall the game telling you to press it multiple times you may need to just tap once when it tells you as I recall he'll grab the thing a few times and let go but eventually he'll kill the hydra.
It worked for me the first time and all the other times I tryed in fact the Hydra is one of my favorite boss fights in the game. The game its not frustrating at all (Unless you play the God mode) its a extremely cool experience, if its a glich try to replace the game, if not, take a rest and do what the game promps you to do in fact its realy easy and I never have to make some extremely super fast buton smashing, this games are designed to preserve your controls.
I double checked and this seems to be a glitch.In A I e x walkthrough of God Of War, some people emailed him saying no matter how hard they pressed they couldn't impale the Hydra.Go replace your copy and see if it works.
If you dont have an authentic ps2 controller from sony, then you CAN have problems with pushing the O button fast enough. I was at a friends house and he had a controller that he just bought that wasnt from sony. i tried playing GOW but just couldnt do it with the damn controller he had so i switched it with a sony one and it was as easy as pie again...so it actually could be the controller if its not a sony one.
I had the same problem when i first bought my copy, i tried about a hundred times and was about ready to return it, but i gave it a few last tries and finally got it, so just keep at it or if you cant get it at all, go return it and get a new copy, but its not a glitch, its just really hard. So keep at it :).
well..thanks for all your help everyone. I honestly DID spend well over 2 hours on that hydra to the point where I threw my controller across the room after the 200th time the damn mast didnt break. Thanks to whoever made the suggestion about holding the controller with my left hand and pressing it with my right index finger. For some reason that works much better than the thumb (in all parts of the game seemingly.) Just wanted to update everyone and hopefully bring this awfully embarassing thread to a close.
You have the GREATEST HITS copy just like me and i cant beat it either so tommorow im gonna return it and buy one thats not a greatest hits one. HEY I FEEL BAD FOR YOU AND STOP WASTING YOUR TIME BECAUSE ITS NOT GONNA WORK SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME
