Those are all great suggestions, but one that I have to give attention to is Klonoa 2. Though the storyline only raises questions for fans, it's still a great 3D game with 2D gameplay. I highly recommend the original (more than the sequel), but that's a PSOne game.

GRADIUS V
The best Gradius to date! and i would even go as far as to say its better than ikaruga.

Might want to pick up an action replay max disc as it turns your PS2 into a SNES emulator for near infinite play value.

ODIN SPHERE! It's amazing, and grim grimoire is by the same makers and just about as good. Otherwise look towards any NIS games like Disgaea, La puchelle (bleah), or Phantom Brave. Ys or some Atlus games, Ar Tonelico, Stella Deus etc. Just look around and you'll find them.

I personally like Atelier Iris 1, and I haven't seen R-Type final mentioned yet -- 3-d visuals, 2-d gameplay. And if anyone hasn't mentioned Metal Slug Anthology add that to your list, too.

Well i wouldent say R-type final is a horrible game just that its worse than R-type delta by a good margin and even that one is really ONLY recomended to the really really really hardcore shmup fan

Instead of skill and reflexes this series are based on endless and seamless memorisation and synchronisation, do everything in the right order at the exact right time.

I have to disagree; R-Type Final is a really good (side scroling shooter) game. It actually showed that the genre still has room to evolve. While I will agree that Gradius V has the one up in the visual/audio department, from what I have read it (GV) is a really generic gameplay experience.
