If you have never played either then I would say GT4. However, imo, if you have played GT3, then the sequel seems more like it should have been called GT3.5. Still great, but nothing really new.
GT4! It has a more realistic sense of speed, and better graphics. And yet GT3 seemed to have a more realistic feel when drifting with powerful rear wheel drive cars. But GT4 screwed up big time in one aspect because it doesn't allow you to buy things for cars, make changes, drive them, and then NOT save and you haven't lost any money. GT4 FORCES a save so you can't try parts out before you buy them! :(

this is true, sometimes I spent too much money upgrading cars that werent worth upgrading that forced me to repeat low level races over and over to get more money.
but still it is well worth it. If you like cars at all, you should own the game.
