1. Massive third party support, and an install base that carried over from the PS1. It also helped that it was the first (then-) next-gen console on the market.
2. Some huge price drops and solid sales that continued throughout its lifespan, resulting in 120 million units being sold to date. In comparison, the GC sold 21 million units and the Xbox sold 24 million.
3. All of the above factors caused third party developers to continue to support it. If there's still money to be made, then there's no reason to abandon it.
