Why is the Ps2 still alive thriving of third party games and Sports games remakes. Then again it did better then it's son. Also it's good cheap ass people who can't afford a next -gen conslesto play big title ment for next-gen consles but still side log on ps2. But back to main point how is the black box's heart still beating.

A great existing fan base. It's a more well rounded gaming system. Great games, many of which are now, yes, cheap. And good marketing. That's my reasoning.

1. Massive third party support, and an install base that carried over from the PS1. It also helped that it was the first (then-) next-gen console on the market.

2. Some huge price drops and solid sales that continued throughout its lifespan, resulting in 120 million units being sold to date. In comparison, the GC sold 21 million units and the Xbox sold 24 million.

3. All of the above factors caused third party developers to continue to support it. If there's still money to be made, then there's no reason to abandon it.

The fact that my store (EB games) had a sale around boxing week selling all used fat ps2's for 40 bucks might be a reason. That, and the fact that the 40 gig ps3 cant play any ps2 games and the 80 gig is around 60-75 percent compadible with ps2 games.

The 80 gig PS3 plays 85% of PS2 games so far. The system is well seasoned, and has an amazing library and it still has support because it can and will live longer. The next generation which is the current generation with PS3Wii360 doesn't matter that it's the current generation because the PS2 can still go on, until it's really time to move on. One reason that Gamecube and the original Xbox are dead now because Microsoft and Nintendo probably knew that they couldn't keep their old consoles alive anymore and that they would lose support from gamers and companies. This is most likely the PS2s last year alive, and it will be always remembered.

The reason is very clear to everyone but you. PlayStation outlasted the other two due to its experience with the production of a console game. Nintendo may have had this but there was just to little they did in the way of making the games to a wider consumer basis they focus on the demographic of children and the lack of Internet usage. Xbox may have been made by Microsoft (money grabbing) and they cut service to the first generation to make sure the consumer bought into the second gen console.
