Sure it will be around for another 2-3 years, but nothing of value is going to be released for it. A console is dead when the only developers doing anything on it are third rate, within a few months this will be the case on the PS2. Barely an E3 showing, the PS2 is following the Xbox and likely will not have anything at all for the next E3.
2 years. Did you know the NES was so well liked that it lasted until the Nintendo 64 came out? That's what I think the PS2 will do. Because of the PS3 price and the PS2 is still getting 2 guitar heros and other good games.
About 2 years. A lot of games are still coming out for ps2; for example, Mercenaries 2 world in flames. People with ps2s who dont care that much on graphics but care about gameplay and variety will still buy games for their ps2 whether it's used or not. I still do. :) Shadow of the Colossus will be my next game. I haven't even played it yet!!!
But I think at the end of year, it will probably start to become really diffcult to buy them brand new in a shop, but you will probably still be able to get them a few places online and games stores like game and gamestation will probably still be selling pre-owned games at for another 2.5-3 years.
I think it will last for a very long time. ThePS2 still has way more games worth stealing than the PS3 does right now even when you take into account of future releases for the PS3.
The PS1 was released in 1995, and had games released for it until 2005. However, the hype really died down in 2003 and only 4 or 5 games were released for itin 2005. Yet, some considered it to be alive until March 23, 2006, when Sony finally stopped producing it. If you ask me that's when a system officially "dies", though many will probably consider systems dead before production is actually stopped.
Anyway, I'm sure PS2 will get games until 2009, but the hype will most likely die down next year just like the PS1 in it's 8th year.
Until the price on the ps3 is lowered obviously, but also until the ps3 gains some confidence among the gamers since right now, most ps2 owners aren't really concerned about the transfer over to next-gen simply because the ps2 is still coming out with decent and hard-hitting games and is still impressing with it's titles.

Gamestation still sell pre-owned NES games and thats 15 years on so i would reckon for another 5 years at least.
It will last just because the pricetag on PS3s is still huge. But I agree with Tohru_Readman, by holidays or early into Q1 of 08, it'll be hard to find a brand new PS2 in a store.
