every final fantasy has its own story/characters. but u should try Persona 3, it's a very good game.sephirothXD
Are you crazy? They are telling you they are new to RPGs and want something to test the waters and you send them to SMT?
I recommend Dark Cloud 2, Final Fantasy X and XII (X-2 after you have played X). This would give you a gradual introduction into RPGs.

Ok, thanks! :)Just did some more checking, the Tales series is a good place to start, Tales of Legendia (didnt like it personally), Tales of the Abyss (never played it but heard good things). If you want a strategy RPG (SRPG for short) Disgaea is a good place to start if you can find it for cheap or any other game by NIS (Disgaea's developers). Both Kingdom Hearts are good, so since you played the first one and enjoyed it odds are you will enjoy the second.
I wouldnt go for Dragon Quest VIII, too much level grinding. Remember everyone, you are trying to make this person enjoy RPGs not scare them away. They can play the more difficult ones later.
considering how you've played Paper Mario 2, i'm assuming you have a Gamecube, so definitely get Tales of Symphonia. it's the game that got me into RPG's. it has an engaging real time battle system, and awesome gameplay other then just that. the story's a little cliche but if you're new to RPG's it won't be noticable at all.
also get Final Fantasy X. it's $20 by now, and it's incredibly fun. Dragon Quest VIII is good too, even though the gameplay's pretty simple.
a lot of you are telling him to stay away from persona 3 why? if he knows rpg basic as in (have best armor/weapons/accessories at all times, adequate level, level up often, save often) then what is there to fear about Persona 3? Honestly its a great game to dive into, even if your sorta new to the genre. All you need to know is to exploit your enemies weakness and avoid monsters that use hama/mudo skills (while grinding) and you should have no problems. At times a little luck is needed I will agree. For me it has been a fun and decently challenged game. I had my moments in the game, but it was lack of my laziness to go save at certain intervals.PreLuDe_DuDe
There is nothing wrong with Persona 3 or any of the SMT titles, they are fantastic games and rate among my favourites. Dont you think they are a little tough to stomach on someone who is new to the genre? I have been playing RPGs my entire life and I can tell you straight all SMT titles are niche and have a higher difficulty level than normal RPGs. One should start with mainstream games of a genre before they get into the niche titles.
FFX is a very good game to me, but it doesn't have an ATB (Active Time-?I think-...Battle system The opponents attack while you are choosing your moves) system, so some people may not be as interested in as say...any other FF with the ATB option.
Check out the FF games, then the Kingdom Hearts games. Very good games, but I didn't check out FFX-2.
Dude if you haven't played RPG's, Playstation 1 is the best place to start. The first RPG you should ever play is Chrono Trigger (On Final fantasy Chronicles), Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears. Once you've played some PS1 RPGs then move onto the PS2.
