Ok so I've never really played any RPGs except Pokemon (which I love) and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (which I find a little too kiddish and reading the dialouge gets kinda boring). I've also rented Kingdom Hearts 2 (which I believe is an Action RPG), but I din't understand the story too good but I did love the gameplay. So, I was wondering if it would be good to buy Kingdom Hearts and then Kingdom Hearts 2 or should I try a regular RPG. If I get a regular RPG I would like to try a Final Fantasy game, but I'm not sure which one: X and X-2 or XII? And I am also wondering if there is a new story in every Final Fantasy (except the spin-offs like X-2) Thanks for any answers.

Are you crazy? They are telling you they are new to RPGs and want something to test the waters and you send them to SMT?

I recommend Dark Cloud 2, Final Fantasy X and XII (X-2 after you have played X). This would give you a gradual introduction into RPGs.

I would say try to pick up Final Fantasy X or even Dragon Quest 8. Both those games are really fun and worth the $20 or less for each one.

Just did some more checking, the Tales series is a good place to start, Tales of Legendia (didnt like it personally), Tales of the Abyss (never played it but heard good things). If you want a strategy RPG (SRPG for short) Disgaea is a good place to start if you can find it for cheap or any other game by NIS (Disgaea's developers). Both Kingdom Hearts are good, so since you played the first one and enjoyed it odds are you will enjoy the second.

I wouldnt go for Dragon Quest VIII, too much level grinding. Remember everyone, you are trying to make this person enjoy RPGs not scare them away. They can play the more difficult ones later.

considering how you've played Paper Mario 2, i'm assuming you have a Gamecube, so definitely get Tales of Symphonia. it's the game that got me into RPG's. it has an engaging real time battle system, and awesome gameplay other then just that. the story's a little cliche but if you're new to RPG's it won't be noticable at all.

also get Final Fantasy X. it's $20 by now, and it's incredibly fun. Dragon Quest VIII is good too, even though the gameplay's pretty simple.

Suikoden 3 or 5 are also good places to start where you don't need to know the storylines of the previous games and you won't be overwhelmed with difficult RPG elements right off the bat.

really, don't star by personna 3, or by any shin megami tensei for that matter. they are probably some of the hardest rpgs now. try the .hack\\G.U. trilogy, or final fantasy X or final fantasy XII, you also have kingdom hearts, but that is a little more action game than a normal rpg.

For Final Fantasy, XII is the best of the PS2 games. FFIX is a great starting point, though. If you want a pure gameplay experience, give hte Elder Scrolls a try. They are fantastic,. Knights of hte Old REpublic is an ezxcellent mix of a cross between turn based and action RPG and story. Kingdom Hearts really isn't all that good, though. IT is very VERY overrated. IF yopu want a serious RPG experience, seek out Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2. (play them in order). They are great games, and they offer up quite a bit of challenge that games like FFX or KH lack

Final fantasy X and XII are the savest way to go for newcomers
Do yourself a favour and ignore the people saying persona 3, its not a bad RPG but you are likely to get overwhelmed and completely turned off by the genre

a lot of you are telling him to stay away from persona 3 why? if he knows rpg basic as in (have best armor/weapons/accessories at all times, adequate level, level up often, save often) then what is there to fear about Persona 3? Honestly its a great game to dive into, even if your sorta new to the genre. All you need to know is to exploit your enemies weakness and avoid monsters that use hama/mudo skills (while grinding) and you should have no problems. At times a little luck is needed I will agree. For me it has been a fun and decently challenged game. I had my moments in the game, but it was lack of my laziness to go save at certain intervals.

The xenosaga series is good But the final fantasy series would be the best place to start they are what made RPG's so popular. (Might be getting myself in to trouble by saying that but it is what i personally think). But If graphics don't really matter i would pick up final fantasy 7-8 go back and kick it old school but they are well worth it they are awesome games. Final fantasy 10 and 12 as people have already said are really good games also the battle systems are different but u can do some research to figure out what u like. I love the xenosaga series just because xenogears was the first rpg that i played and they r good. But final fantasy games r the way to go:)

There is nothing wrong with Persona 3 or any of the SMT titles, they are fantastic games and rate among my favourites. Dont you think they are a little tough to stomach on someone who is new to the genre? I have been playing RPGs my entire life and I can tell you straight all SMT titles are niche and have a higher difficulty level than normal RPGs. One should start with mainstream games of a genre before they get into the niche titles.

FFX is a very good game to me, but it doesn't have an ATB (Active Time-?I think-...Battle system The opponents attack while you are choosing your moves) system, so some people may not be as interested in as say...any other FF with the ATB option.

Check out the FF games, then the Kingdom Hearts games. Very good games, but I didn't check out FFX-2.

Dude if you haven't played RPG's, Playstation 1 is the best place to start. The first RPG you should ever play is Chrono Trigger (On Final fantasy Chronicles), Final Fantasy 7, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears. Once you've played some PS1 RPGs then move onto the PS2.

Actually if you want to have some good experiences with RPG's I suggest that you go old school and play the SNES version of FF 3, FF 2, or Super Mario RPG. Legend of Dragoon was nice on the PS1 along with FF 7 and I really liked Legend of Legia ( the first one on PS1) I have FF 12 but although I like the gameplay I couldn't tell you crap about the story...It just didn't grab me.

As well as FF X, FF XII, and DQ VIII, I also suggest Xenosaga Ep. 1. The last two weren't as great, but Xenosaga Ep. 1 was seen as one of the first real challengers to FF X's throne as far as PS2 RPGs go.

Dark Cloud 2, KH1-2, Disgaea 2, .Hack GU 1-3 and the rest is downhill from there.
