no you need that thing that plugs into the ps2 to use the remote i think

The PS2 doesn't require any plug in for the remote.  The Xbox does however.

No, the remote is for using the DVD instead of the controller.

no for the fat one theres a switch in the back you turn that on and push the reset button...

You do turn off your PS2 but the power remains on, hense the red light instead of a green light.  It's like a power save mode, or sleep mode when the red light is on.

If the remote has a power on/off button, then the answer is, yes, you can shut off the power.
