Being a PC game fan, I never owned a PS2.  A while ago, I started thinking about buying one but seeing PS3 was coming soon, I decided to wait.  Although I've read news about how powerful PS3 is, it's unfortunately too expensive and I don't know when sony may cut their price. what's more, the selling of PS3 doesn't look too promising and this may affect future PS3 games.  This all make me think whether I should buy a PS2 instead.  Of course, I don't think Sony will provide too much support for PS2 in the future and thus not sure whether it'd be a good investment for me. So I'm really thinking whether I should buy a PS2 now or wait to buy a PS3 in the future.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.  thanks.

You could buy a 360 if you want, but a PS2 is cheaper than that and the PS2 has the best collections in it's library so yeah,it's still worth buying.

the ps2 is the best choice atm, and dont worry about games it has coverage until the year 2009, so expect plenty of games to come out by then. also with the good games becoming greatest hits it makes getting that game you want for a cheaper price.

It's cheap, especially if you get it used, the games are still cheap as well, also if used, and it's still fun to play. I'd go for it.

I'd say get a PS2, theres plenty of great games for it and still more to come for awile.  One game worth buying is God Of War II and the origional then if your into RPG's you might want to check out some FF games and try DQVIII if your up for a very long game that is worth it

Thanks for the tips.  Xbox 360 isn't really on my list because many of its games are action-based, whereas I'd prefer RPG, especially final fantasy kind of games, which are turn-based RPG. This probably means I should go for a Japanese game console.

In addition, are there many stores selling PS2?  I asked a few shops and some said they didn't have PS2 in stock any more and i was even told sony wouldn't make any new PS2.  Another thing is I tried to find those games that I really want, such as FFX, but again, have got no luck of finding it so far.  I guess I can only get second-hand ones, and possibly second-hand PS2 (if I'm not quick enough to buy a new one now), but where can I find second hand ones that still have good quality? Since PS games have disk format, which can be easily scratched. I'm really concerned about having a game that isn't playable, or, becomes not playable after I'm half way through, which is even worse...

Is it worth it? Heel yeah! Go for it! There are some must have games for it. I would safely reccomend ( after buying a PS@ that is :) ) the following games

Metal Gear Solid 2 or 3

Gran Turismo 4 ( if you like racing simulator )

Final Fantasy X or XII ( if you like RPG )

Devil May Cry 1 or 3 ( if you like action hack n slash games )

Cool, so many games that can keep me busy for a long time. :)  By the way, there's no wal mart in australia, is this a gamespot.au forum?

I tried some local shops and can't find a PS2, and I'm considering buying online. I've heard about the so-called regional control, so when I buy it, do I need to pay attention to the supported regions?  Is there any universal version instead?  The thing is I tend to travel a lot, and I'm hoping to bring PS2 with me in case I'm bored. If there's no regional control, then I'd easily buy new games from anywhere and play it on my PS2.

If you don't want to spend the money, then yes the PS2 is very much worth it. PS3 is amazing though,  and it will play all the PS2 and PS games. I haven't ran into to one that hasn't worked yet. There are a lot of great games coming out for it. This fall is going to be great for PS3 owners.

Yeah, it's definitely worth it to get a PS2. It's an amazing game console. As for where to get one, most stores around here still have them new; I saw a few on the shelves at Best Buy when I was there the other day. And the games and consoles are region-coded, so you'll have to pay attention to that; it's the PS3 that doesn't have region codes.

I would strongly reccomend the PS2 because it will give you access to thousands (including PS1) of games that you've never played before, hundreds of them are great games. Think of that hundreds of great games all just waiting to be played and they will never be cheaper. There is so much there that you really don't need the PS3. I've been playing PS2 for years and I've still got loads of games to play through before I go next gen.

If u live in Europe u should get a PS2.  If not, get a PS3. The European version of PS3 is a joke. That's because it doesn't play the greatest PS2 nor PS1 games. Link to a site showing all those PS1 and PS2 games that are playable on PS3. Really, the only PAL PS2 game that i own which works on the PS3 is MGS3: Subsistance. Just one game, thanks a lot SONY... Oh I totally forgot Magnacarta, but I am not too sure if it even works coz I haven't played it for some reason...

PS2 was the greatest last gen console, at least when it comes down to games. Cube as a close
second followed by Dreamcast. Oh, I guess there was that microsoft console that flopped among SEGA's Dreamcast, though at least Dreamcast got more than 5 good games. PS2 got the largest variety of different games. Really, if u haven't bought PS2 yet u should buy
one now.

U being a PC gamer I am not sure u will like most of the PS2 games, since PC and console games are helluva different... I love both but many of my friends that play on PC dislike consoles. Try it before u buy it. That's my advice to you.

PS. Maybe u should try some exclusives coz multiplatforms are usually the best on GC because of the controller. And GC would be a great choice too, though there aren't many good games for it.

Why won't you buy one? You won't regret it. Besides, if you buy PS3 now, it's too early and too expensive. PS2 has a lot of good games, than any other consoles. :D

It depends. If you use auction sites then it isn't that difficult. But you won't find old games in normal game e-shops.

I can find all those great old games from amazon, but I suspect they are only playable on PS2 US version.  I live in OZ, and there's no amazon here, sigh... Ebay is an alternative I can try, but whether I can find the games I like really depend on if there're sellers out there.

Region codes do give me a headache, and that's why PS3 sounds a bit appealing.  But ultimately my decision will have to be based on the games, and if many PS2 games aren't playable on PS3, then I really shouldn't get a PS3 (at least not now).  Why has SONY made such a blunder?  Backward compatibility is usually a must.

Im sure BestBuy have them and local WalMart has too, and recently I saw silver ones.....if you can better off get a PS3, it plays most of new and PS2 games. I think PS2 is still worth buying for the price and it has more games to choose than anything other consoles.

It really depends.

Sony is still making quality games for ps2 and should for at least another 5 months. Also, there are hundreds of ps2 games that are still worth buying. On the other hand, if you are like me then you hate memory cards, and the 360, and ps3 takes care of that. Also, 360 and ps3 live is alot better, and they have better graphics. I would go with the ps2.

Good, I'll certainly get my PS2. :)  By the way, I've heard about some modified chip that allows a PS2 to play games made in other regions.  Can I ask SONY or some shops to install a chip by paying extra money?  I was told PS2 can play movies made in all regions, is this true?

Thanks a lot for these suggestions. :)

Before I go and buy a PS2, there're a few things that I'd like to find out:

a. what accessories do I need to buy? i heard there's no hardrive like xbox or PS3, so do i need to buy some memory card? if so, how much memory do i need?   any other accessories?

b. can i have a pre-installed chip that allows me to play games across multiple regions?  what about watching films?

c. this is really important: what games shall i get now? i'll certainly buy FFX, having heard so many good things about it.  i'll also buy a car racing game, which one is good?  if there're other must-have games, i'd also love to know. :)  btw, i generally don't like shooting games, or action kind of games.

 d. other tips if you have. :)

You will need to get a memory card or two to be able to save your games. You should be okay with just one for now; you can always get more later on if you need to. I don't think PS2 memory cards come in different sizes, although I could be wrong about that. Other than that, the only thing you might want to get is an extra controller.

I don't know about the multiple region thing...I think it is possible to mod your PS2 to do so, but I don't know anything about it, and I think it voids your warranty. Sorry I can't be more help.

If you want a racing game, get either a Gran Turismo game (if you like realistic driving sims) or one of the Need for Speeds (if you like arcade style racers). Others that are good...Kingdom Hearts, Xenosaga, Guitar Hero, Rogue Galaxy, Disgaea, aand...that's all I can think of right now that isn't more action-oriented.

Thanks, I'll try to find these games. :)  I thought Sony could do the modification if I pay extra money.  If it's not done by sony then perhaps it's not safe..  I just found out the region codes for PS2 are:

NTSC/J for Japan  and Asia,

NTSC-U/C for North America

PAL for Europe and Oceania

NTSC/C for China.

If this is correct, then I think as long as I make sure the games I buy online have code PAL, I can play in oz,

I would say absolutely not. Go with the PS3. The current and future PS3 games are completely friggin awesome, especially if you have a HDTV. The PS3 is not going to fail. Once all the good games start coming out, and the developers start learning how to use the cell, the PS3 will destroy everything out there. Not to mention that you can download software updates for the console, and it upscales PS2 games to high definition. I enjoy playing my PS2 games more than I ever did because of this.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.  thanks.

I'm also a PC game fan.. If there's a lot of games you want to play in PS2, then it is still worht buying it coz there are lots of excellent PS2 games that were not released on PC(e.g. FF X2, FF XII, MGS 2, MGS 3, Gran Turismo 4, God of War.... etc.). I just bought a modded slim PS2. I know PS3 is already out but it is so expensive. Consoles here in SE Asia are expensive. PS3 costs about Php 45000, Xbox 360 costs Php 25000, and PS2 costs Php 10000. Exchange rate in our country is 1 US Dollar = 46 Pesos
