I know someone who bought a couple of used games and one of them looks a little bogus to me. Could playing a game that's of dubious origin damage your PS2?

Uhm, no, not really. Scratched discs can't damage your PS2. There are other downsides to buying used games, though.

By bogus, do you mean counterfeit, or scratched?

I don't like buying used stuff period almost to the point of being an obsession so i wouldn't by a used game even if I didn't have any suspicions about it. I was just wondering if a game that was counterfeit could mess up your ps2 somehow?

I wouldn't think it would damage your system, unless the laser was having trouble reading the disk, and like what happens when you put in a bad DVD into a DVD player, it starts spinning it around super fast (and wears out the spinner). If it were me though, I probably wouldn't use it, just in case.

My main thing is that the disk and the case are in good shape. Having the manual is nice too, though admittedly most games manuals are either full of annoying spoilers or not helpful at all. So its not a big loss if that is missing.

But I dont want coffee stains all over everything, or marks where whoever owned it before was making cocaine lines on the disk with a razor blade, etc.

I am amazed at the number of used games out there without cases. I generally assume that if someone kept the packaging in good shape the rest will be taken care of.

Although what was said above is true. You dont support the developer at all when you buy used, so when it is a small studio that you want to encourage the existance of, you should look to buy new if you can afford to.

Worried about a scratch disc? If you go to a local Game Stop with high credibility with unscratched games, then you are on the right track. Certain stores may have a very anal manager that is a pain to those who trade in scratched games. In fact, I was one of those...If a scratch is too noticible then I sent it back to warehouse regardless of the situation.

Though, small scratches should be playable unless you are one of those who refuses to have ONE small scratch. Downsides of used? When some one does not know how to distinguish a fake game with a real one. To use an obvious example? This is true.

Pokemon Ruby: Actual game, but instead of that clear red casing? It came with an original grey casing and on the back...It said Ninfendo. :/.....The bank taught me something that made sense..Counterfeiters always make typos....Especially on something that should NOT be messed up, like a company's name.

Game Discs are easily distinguished. People often use horrible ink or they use Discs that are not the normal color of a game disc.

Tips for buying used games:

  • Make sure you know the condition of the disk. Is it pristine or a litte scratched or scratched to hell?? A trip to your local video store and around 3$ will persuade them to take a disc doctor to it which sands a thin layer off the disc and removes the scratches. Sand it to much though and you will start removing game layers. Still scratched discs are usually cheaper than non scratched so you may save money and get something just as good.
  • Do you care about packaging? Do you really need the stupid case and manual? Most likely not but if you ever plan to resell the game then you ill get alot more for it if you have those things.
  • KNOW YOUR REGION. If you are getting your games from ebay or some other place make damn sure you know what region the game is for and what region your ps2 is because those stupid auction sites let retards from England and people who import sell their crap on ebay. Most sellers will tell you but its YOUR JOB to make sure. Canada,USA,mexico = NTSC i think. UK = PAL. Asia = ???

I get stuff off ebay all the time and have no problems. A couple of games I have got for a penny! To bad they overcharge for shipping.

I buy used games, but they are sent to polish first, by the store. I get them like new. Scratches don't afect the PS2.

I get alot of games used and I always cringe when I see that a game has been run through a skip-doctor. They tend to get that wax-on-wax-off pattern on the data side. Never had a problem though...(knock on wood)...yet.

Meh, i personally dont bother with used games, I dont see why anyone would bother when you can get the same game brand new (sealed) off ebay for the same money or even less. Really if you dont mind waiting a bit to snipe for good bargains (its an auction site afterall) and time it takes for shipment
