I'd recommend opening it up but seeing how you totally overlooked the DRE stickied thread at the top of the forum, I'm not sure if you should.
How to fix it is in that thread. If you do be careful when you take apart the outer case - just slowly, carefully pry it open - because the power ribbon is connected to the case.
I wouldn´t rely on buying a PS3 for compatibility purposes because it´s being made by software emulation, which has a lot of flaws. I´d rather fix the good ol´ PS2 instead.
i know how you fell dude it just happened to me my ps2 stop spinnng the disk i can on the thing but in the broser it will show reading disk for 2 sec then stop yeah i brought it to the shop and thel said they wont fix it coz it will cost as much as a new ps2 well now im sad and disappointed that i have to dig in to my ps3 fun to get a ps2 slim, and i know buying a s3 is a better option but i think there is still time to wait for must have games to come out and i can fell another price drop soon lol
