Final Fantasy X - The best of the PS2 Final Fantasy's. Good story, and really good characters. I have found that I became so attached to them I actually kind of enjoyed FFX-2. Nice gameplay as well, although I'm not happy they left out some stuff from the US version that they had in the PAL version.
Xenosaga 1-3 - Good series if you can get into the game play which is really bad. Luckily the story and the characters make up for the game play completely. Just put in you codebreaker and sit back and enjoy the story. If your interested in gameplay then I would avoid it.
Suikoden III - Another good story driven game, with some pretty interesting characters once you get past the gryphon named Fubar. If you can find it, I would definetly recommend it. I have already gone through 2 copies and I am currently on my third. I have the fourth copy sitting in my safe as I have played this game into the ground.
Also, pickup the Genesis Collection. It includes the Phantasy Star 2-4 and Sword of Vermillion. Which are some really good old RPG's. Since, I'm not a big fan of Action RPG's I will leave those to someone else.
Shadow Hearts is a great choice. It has a very unique battle mechanic that actually requires skill AND strategy..... well, more skill that strategy. Also, Final Fantasy XII is a must-have PS2 title. If you have not gotten it already, go out now and get it.
there are too many good rpg games. try looking at the game reviews that gs has, i'm pretty sure every game that they end up suggesting to you have at least 7.0 in ther reviews
