The games follow a time line. First in line is Onimusha 1 where you play as Samanosuke, then comes Onmusha 2 where you play as Jubei, then comes Onimusha 3 which brings back Samanosuke and adds the appearance of Jaques (Jean Reno) and lastly comes Onimusha 4 or dawn of dreams which happens many years after Onimusha 3.
You can play it on its own, you wont need the past one to understand it, but if you can play them just for the fan services along the game.

I would say it kind of matters to understand why you are killing demons its best youlearn the storyline and play onimusha 1+2 the second version of Onimusha is the best in my opinion

i started off playing part 2.. but only played up to pt 3.. im gonna buy 1 and 2.. .. just know all the games are connected in some way and they do make references to eachother.. and there is one specific villain in each story.. i dont wanna give that away.. but he is pointed out in part 2 then you see him again in pt 3 and at the end of that game.. he is really revealed. onimusha series are really good. i love it.

the thing that upsetted me about pt 3though is that they open it with this beautiful cutscene with samanosuke taking down a demon army(the best cutscene ive ever seen in any game) but thats the only beautiful scene in the game.. i dont know what happened.. i think theres another at the end but theres barely another beautiful fight scene as that.

they all have a pretty decent length. aint play them in a while so i cant give you an approximate length.. but you wont be disappointed.just know its a CAPCOM game.. they always deliver in length and story. their controls suck though.. you always have to follow their rules of control.. youre not free as you would be to maneuver in a prince of persia game or tenchu game..

You don't need to play the previous game to understand it. but it would be a good idea to get the first three games anyway to ad to your collection. They are cheap now anyway. You can get that used for next to nothing.

oh and to answer this question.. i guess it really depends on you.. if the story line matters to you then you should start off with the first one.. I would start off with the first if I had a choice.. besides it wont hurt your pocket.. it costs right now from $4.00 to $9.00.. and another thing is all the games improve as you go up in the sequels.. so if you play the last one.. you will not be as into the first one because the controls are not the same and some attributes of the game(like upgrading your armor and weapons) may not be the same.

so in conclusion.. I'd say start with the first and move your way up... by the time you get up to the last one.. the price will be cheaper than it is now. =) .. I should be a friggin economist.

A few words of caution: AVOID Onimusha 2. This game didn't contribute anything to the story.

Just buy this one, it actually has a completely different hero, villian, and time- Soki (H) and Hideyoshi Toyotomi (V), after the fall of the Oda (T)
