Because many gamers don't know what is PERSONA 3.

Persona 3 is just as much a Shin Megami Tensei game as Digital Devil Saga is. I don't see the problem here.

Interesting, got a link to an official source for this? Atlus USA seems not to want to update us on P3 lately. I've heard that EB/Gamestop apparently put a listing in their system for it as "SMT: Persona 3 Special Edition" with an artbook and OST for pre-orders and a 7/24 release. But it's actually been listed with the SMT in some retail listings for a long time (Amazon.com, eStarland, even Wal-Mart), correctly or not. I have yet to see anything official anywhere yet to indicate that's really part of the title now.

If true, I could definitely see why they'd do it for the U.S. release here, although I don't necessarily agree with it. Persona has always been a series that was separate but peripheral to the true SMT games, and they admittedly do share some similarities throughout their histories. It wasn't called that in Japan, nor is P3: Fes, but I'm sure they're hoping the recognition of the SMT name among RPG enthusiasts here in the states will get the game more attention than it would otherwise. I'd love to see where you heard this though, since I haven't heard anything official being said about P3 for a while now, and a lot of us are eager to hear any hint about just what might be included once it's released here. The Fes content is almost too much to hope for given the time-frame, but it'd be nice to hear confirmation either way.

I'm not happy with the name change.  I really don't see why it's necessary.

Yes I know it's not necessary for you but it's necessary for Atlus because they can sell more copy. Just think about some gamers who are new to RPG . Would he buy the title which is he never heard of before? I mean he may think "Persona 3?? WTF is it??"  . In Japan most of them do know what is "PERSONA" but not in USA. Every Final Fantasy game has diffenrent theme and diffenrent game play. But I never see one complaining about how DQ/Enix use the same title on most of their game , even on a TPS shooting like FF : Dirge of Ceberus.

I don't see why it even matters, besides Shin Megami Tensei being written before Persona 3 on the box. You are overreacting.

I just don't think it's necessary because a name like SMT doesn't carry much weight with it anyway.  Therefore, I see it as a lame attempt to brand a niche RPG to the masses.  Persona 3 would have been a fine title for the game.
All I know is that adding SMT to the title seems wrong.  It just rubs me the wrong way

Shin Megami Tensei is more known compared to just "Persona", like some of you mentioned. Thats the main reason for the renaming perhaps. I think its a good move. Another SMT title in my collection. ;)

you're all missing the point. The key reason they changed the name is because persona is generally unknown in the us. It stands a better chance of doing well in the add Shin megami tensei into the title.

Well, I hope they keep the original name, that way my collection of the Persona series (Persona (PS1), Persona 2 (PS1)) will be better (No SMT ruining the name). 8)
