I bought my PS2 used a few years ago and I was wondering if anyone knows what the typical lifespan of PS2 is. With the new model coming out I may pick one up, unless I can still get plenty of mileage out of my current old-school PS2. I've played it a lot; probably gotten hundreds of hours of gameplay on it. I also take pretty good care of it. I don't know if that plays into it at all. Anyway, let me know if anyone has any experiences with old PS2's.

I've had mine since launch, no problems yet, but most likely its going to crap out soon -_-, I get lag in some games, it takes longer to load than usual and it makes a lot of clicky sounds on loading screens...

As long as you don't spill water on it or drop it on the floor, it should work for a LONG time

Worry more about your 360's lifespan, like I worry about mine.

I have had my PS2 since October 2001. In 2005 I thought it was dying because it wouldnt play Dvds and not load many games. But It turned out that the lens was dirty, so I opened her up and cleaned it all up. Thats the only problem I have had. I played it almost every day since I got it up until about a year ago , so thats 6 years gaming :D ( plus it still works)

Mine has never looked like giving out on me. But I only used it for a couple of years before I got a slimline, then I only used that for a couple of years before I sold it.

My first PS2 lasted about 5 years before the laser just couldn't do it any more. Now I'm enjoying my second. I'd say they just don't make them like they used to, but I think there are just so many precision moving parts now, in a console, which is destined to take at least mild abuse from time to time, it's tough to expect them to last forever.

I agree, there are alot of precision parts in the PS2 models, but after a year on the market, the PS3 has shown to have the smallest failure rate of every system on the market. Less than 1% endup being defective, makingit a very reliable investment. I strongly reccomend anyone who is in the market for a long lasting PS1 or PS2 to consider upgrading to a 20, 60, or 80 GB PS3. They just don't break down, and can take a heck of alot of abuse.

I did that a few times since 2002 and its still kicking like a mule.

Another fact of the Playstation: It has the armor of a tank.

I'll agree with that. I'm never scared of leaving my PS3 on for long periods (i still dont do it alot). Im safe in the knowledge that my trusty PS3 will never let me down :) *touch wood*

I had my PS2 from 2001 till last May when I sold it for my 360 (I regret selling) and it was still working, which is a wonder considering I played that thing AND used it as my DVD player for 6 years and the only thing that remotely caused me to worry was dust... of all things. And let's not forget y 360 is now back at the MS base getting repaired from the Red Ring.

I'm not sure, I've owned my PS2 for... hmm... about an hour now (yay!)... kind of a tertiary console. All I know is that last gen consoles are built to last a long time. Even the new ones are sturdy. The only reason I have found for thinking my new ones weren't sturdy (I own a wii and an Xboc 360) is the price. I used to freak out when I dropped my gamecube and my n64 back in the day, and they still work fine. Hell, my n64 has some sort of miscellaneous grease on the slot, and it works perfectly!

But I digress...
I guess my point is that most consoles are built pretty well, and as long as you don't make them wet, you can even drop them.
