if you take off the basic casing, you can get a better look at the laser part of the system. and if you have an air duster (the spray thing), and blow it right into the laser part, you may be able to blow some dust around and fix it. this worked for me a few times. i dunno if this was in the faq, cuz i didnt read that

Your PS2 is going to die soon. The lasers on 3 of my PS2 have all died. The laser on the PS2 does not last that long if you play for a long time. Sony support is unsupportive and rude. They will argue with you and treat the customer badly and blame everything on the customer and void the warranty. SONY is not good.

Google a faq on disc read error for the ps2.  Read the above thread on this forum that relates to the error.  It's an easy fix.  I doubt the guy with the 3 broken ps2's are really  broken.  Give the fix a try.  I'll bet at least two of the three work.

You can try using a q-tip and alcohol to clean the lens.

I clean the lens with alcohol and q-tip. After a while, it does not help at all. It is not the same as a fresh new PS2. Does the slim PS2 exhibit the same problems as the older, bigger PS2?
