I liked Suikoden V a lot. Not as much as Suikoden III overall, but certainly it's a better game than IV seemed to be. (I never got a chance to play I or II, so I can't compare to those.) It's still Suikoden, so it's still very much the old-school RPG with the usual elements (finding and recruiting the 108 Stars, fortress building, duels, military battles, etc.) you'd expect in the series, streamlined and polished a bit here and there.
My only real complaint would be with its pacing, especially at the beginning. Suikoden V has quite a bit of loading times throughout, but in particular the game itself gets off to a very slow start, slower than any RPG I can recall. It eases you into its world and its politics very deliberately, and takes a long time to establish everything with no hurry to get the "main game" rolling for a while. But once it does get going, I certainly found it to be a great game and worth the wait.
