Hey guys, Im just curious if you guys think that its a bit too late to buy a PS2. I have a 360, but it seems like the xbox and ps have totally different types of games. Its missing that final fantasy / gow type games that I want to play. And, before you say "if you want to play ff and gow, get a ps2 dummy!", the whole reason im asking is that im afraid of dumping that much money on a console that I will feel is out of date as soon as I open it. *shrug* Im arguing both sides of it in my head right now, but I was hoping for some fresh input. thanks.

PS2 out of date? Damn man the PS2 have great games to be released, like God of War 2. And it's not late to buy a PS2, with a lot of good games that the PS2 have, you can play the PS2 for a year or two.

Get the PS3, you can play upcoming games and with the backward compatibility you can play all of your PS2 games.  If you don't want the PS3 then stick with the PS2 it's only 130$ and there are still more games scheduled to come out.

I was going to go with a ps3 but its just way to expensive for me and i hear the ps2 games look like crap. Plus i dont have a HDTV...but i could hook it up to my pc monitor like my 360. hmmmm.......but 130 bucks is so tempting :P

yeah, I was considering the PS3 route also, but its a cost prohibitive option. Also on the plus side of the PS2, I have somone locally who will sell and install a duo3 for $80 total. Seems like a pretty good deal.

I would suggest strictly keeping the PS3 read only blu ray discs. The PS2 has so many problems because it is a unit that can read CD and DVD games. It causes wear and tear. I really only play DVDs on the PS2, with the occasional CD based game like SF EX, Gradius 5, DDR Party Collection.

The problem with PS 2 games is that they are not HD compatible, so people tried to output them at 720/1080 and they looked terrible, except those that support it. With the current update, the PS 2 games can be played at 480p in any TV so that fixed the problem, and they will look the same as in the PS 2. So, no more problems there.

To the TC, get a PS 2 if you cant afford a PS 3. If not get a PS 3, or you will loose the same games this gen too.

i'll tell you what i would do at your place: Save up money for ps3, buy it, and then buy the games you want for ps2. anyway its not like ps3 is leaving in two months. you can still wait and pe as patient as you are when you're playing games.

Well, it's certainly not too late to get one. As you say, the PS2 has a very different selection of games than either Xbox -- and a ton more of them, as well. You are correct that you won't be buying a console with cutting edge technology, if that's what's important to you. But you would be buying access to the best selection of quality games in history, including a huge array of great titles that you just can't find anywhere else. And you'd really be doing so at a bargain, at this point -- the console itself is very reasonably priced now, and the games are incredibly inexpensive now for the most part.

Consider what games are available that appeal to you, and think about how many hours/days/weeks/months/years of quality gameplay the PS2 library represents for the price. If you want a console for the technology, there may be better options. But if you want one for the games, you can't go wrong with the PS2. If you've never had one before, you've got a huge amount of great gaming to look forward to, and now is a perfect time to start.

you're right 130 bucks is tempting.  It definitely isn't too late to buy one and if you're not gonna get a ps3 then defintiely pick up a ps2.  Myself, I'm about 300 bucks away from my ps3 but int eh time it takes to amek that money, my ps2 is definitely gonna be seeing some use

No, but look at the games you want to play. I usually say go by the one with more games your gonna play. I'm personally saving for a ps3
