Try cleaning the PS2 and the disc before going out and buying a new game.

I had that problem when playing Ratchet & Clank, and FFXII. I noticed the lid doesn't close properly, so I pushed down on it, and the game started playing again. So now I keep an empty GBA game box on top of it, and it hasn't given me any problems since. Hopefully, that's what is happening to your PS2. It would really suck if you had to buy another copy of VP2, or get your system cleaned.

I had that problem too, but cleaning the (original) PS2 lens solved the problem for me. You might want to try cleaning your lens.

I also had this problem and cleaning the lens and placing a book ontop of my slim while I played solved the problem. If it is your game disc, hopefully you haven't had it to long and can just take it back and exchange it for being defective.

Use milk to clean the lens. It's a really good solution.
