longest game by itself to date is FFX I put about 75-80 hrs into it and I'm still trying to take out Lulu's lightning dodge on occasion. the most on a game series is a 175+ though in the first dot hack series and I can only guess that it will be just as much with the new G.U. series as well as I'm at over a 100 hrs and only the first 2 parts are out now.
Single Session: Grand Turismo 2 on those damn endurance races... forget how long some of them took me, but it was upwards of 10 hours of straight racing.
Overall: I think I had 100+ hours of gameplay time on Castlevania:SOTN if I added up all of my seperate games.
Based on my understanding of the meaning of longest game played, my answer is GTA SA! I still play it once in a while since I bought it last November 2004. Ihaven't touched most of my games after beating it. I think they are dusty by now. Hehe!
hehe Star Ocean Till the end of time i played it about 6 times overall time 700+ and I don't have everything only MAX levels i can play it till the end of time
Dark Cloud 2 was pretty long. I wish they made a part 3, the game was even called PS2's Zelda Killer.

I WOULD play Final Fantasy, but there have been so many FF's that I dont know where to start ( I want to be able to keep up with the story because its confusing at times)
Longest Game to beat: Dragon Warrior 7 aka Dragon Quest VII back on the PS1. It took me over 220 hours to beat that sucker. It was a great game and when I was playing through it I honestly thought it would never end.
Longest Game played: Final Fantasy Tactics. I've invested well over 3,000 hours into that game. I've beaten it more times than I can count, and continue to play it religiously since it's launch day. Infinite replayability FTW.
probably soulcalibur 1 for the dreamcast, i clocked in around 365 hours, FFX-143 hrs, FFVII- i think 200+ plus coz the clock stops at 99:99:99... FFXII-150, but the game i played the most is Halo 2
