I bought this game on Play.com for £10 brand new with free UK delivery but i havent a clue if it will be any good.

Every review has said that there is over 100 hours playing time and its all OLD-Skool role-play, but what the hell is Old skool role play!I have never played on final fantasy in my lie and i never was a strong fan of role play but i realy liked the look of it and i am always complaining abouthow i can compleate most games in 1 day, example, i got tony hawks pro 8 and i finished it within 3 hours!

Well you won't be finishing this in 1 day for-sure.. Its a real adventure game imo with turn-base gameplay. Once you get into it you will be totally addicted.

Funny you say that, I would recommend putting it all into swords first.

It is a good game, I finished it in 80 hours without the sidequests so very lengthy. It is a traditional JRPG and as cliched as they come but that detracts nothing from its beauty. Real open world is fantastic, if you can see it you can go there, simple as that. There is some level grinding that you must do, no two ways about that but the game is ultimately very rewarding.

Its an amazing game. Its one of the better games on the PS2 and in the Top 10 of RPGs for the PS2 as well. Huge landscape, quarky characters and you can customize them as you want. Ive probably played through it 3 or 4 times. And there is some decent sidequest activities in the game. Good pick up my friend, good pick up.

this game is definitely long. I've logged over 50 hrs in to this one game and have yet to beat the midpoint boss! Leveling up does take time and (read) you only get a couple hundred xp per battle and needabout 3000 xp to level up. Sure it's long but the gameplay is excellent and the graphics are really good. All and all you made a good choice.

What is it like? In a word... ****, that's what it's like. read my review if u don't trust me. The only game I regret wasting time in, well Supreme Commander is another and so is halo on PC but DQ is the worst ever.

It's amazing. It's like older roleplaying games like Final Fantasy 1 or Phantasy Star 4. I've played it for about 30 hours and I'm not even near halfway done. If you complain about games taking 1 day to beat, this is for you. If you really care about graphics they are amazing, designed by the guy who designs Dragon Ball. Plus this skills that let you learn abilitys can let you customize your characters to be good at a certain weapon or to learn spells. It's huge, to. Maybe not 100 hours but definitely around 80 depending on how fast you are at RPGs.

simply put as i'm talking to a guy who does not know a thing about DQ OR RPG'S

i'd say it has great graphics on cel shading, it has a great longeivity, it's got a nice, simple but nice and with los of interestings things Story, AND it has (the best part in my opinion) a really vast world to explore, and go where you want freely, detailed with some beautiful graphics, based on aAkira Toriyama's (Dragon ball Z) drawings, enviromets, wich really bring life to the game, plus there is the fact that I finished it within 96 Hs. not with every secret, BUT know this! IF you are not experienced in this role playing games it may be a difficult one to start with :S.

on the other hand i loved the game so i should recommend it to anyone who reads (sorry about any errors on expression, i'm Argentinian and am still learning ^^)

saludos Roy, hope you liked this mini review i made for you whoever you are xD i was inspired, if you want you can track me and i don't know what is it you have to do when someone track you but i'll investigate and do thet somenthing that has to be done xD again saludos in spanish.

Thats why they call this game "Old-school", I never played any of the older DQ'S (DW'S) but I know Dq8 was a good game, I finished it in just over 100 hours, But I never did all the side quests or had all the best weapons. the only bad thing about this game is that it is a tad childish, and the story progresses kinda slowly..

Games im playing now: Resistance: Fall of man -Ps3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma -Ps3, Xenogears -Ps1, Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?Final Fantasy 7

I had an incredible time with this game, definitly one of my all time favorites. I spent over 150 hours on the game, its nice to play with familar gameplay from the older days. The exploring has a real nice feel to it as you look at the landscape from cliffs, etc. The characters are likable and theres humorous dialogue from time to time. You either love it or hate it. I loved it.

The game a demands a certain level of "grinding" (roaming the same area over and over, fighting over and over just to level up). Let's see how you'll put up with that. Personally, I love grinding.

I'm trying to like the game, but it's just so damned boring. Don't get me wrong, I love turn based RPG's, but this one moves SO slow and the character designs are unappealing. I'd personally recommend going the Shadow Hearts or Suikoden route, but I know a lot of people love DQ8. I guess for as cheap as you got it, you can't really go wrong. Hell, I spend more than that going to a two hour long movie, and I put 10 hours into DQ8 so far, so...

The pace is slow so I can see why some would find it boring. The obligatory level grind between each area is another issue and the fact that you can't roam around as you wish because the random battles will slaughter you if you veer away slightly. i can think of many negatives about this game BUT the end product is considerably better than the sum of its parts and thats what makes it a great game.

Grinding isnt what makes a game boring. Its how the game carries out the combat. You dont have to use your brain very much with old-school games. You just click te x button repeatedly. I mean christ they even implemented cursor memory to mke it even easier to spam attack stuff in those types of rpg's. Of course your going to go catatonic. Action based rpg's are the best where you have to move use alot of buttons and there is movement. Strategy doesnt have alot of action or buttons but atleast you have to use your brain to choose where to place units and figure out in wha order you want to do attacks. I mean not only did DQ8 jus implement boring menu driven combat but the animations and attacks just SUCK. They didnt make it old-school for the express purpose of making it old school. They were just lazy and my guess is didnt have alot of money to produce it with.

Dragon Quest is one of their top franchises in Japan, you can bet your hat money was not an issue. It has always been menu driven, more so than more contemporary turn-based RPGs and things were unlikely to be changed. Cursor memory has been in games for more years than I can remember so your point about them including it puzzles me.

While action games are great in their own right, we can hardly claim they are strategic, you still button mash to attack, much faster than you ever would in a turn-based RPG, who deserves the button mash moniker then? Not all SRPG are as strategic as you are led to believe, in quite a few of them all you need is to level beyond the enemy. By that I mean 2 levels above the enemy and you are untouchable. In other SRPGs it is different as they dynamically level according to you, so its much tougher in that regard.
