The newer they are the better mechanics they have period. straight up Dynasty/Samurai Warrior are about hearing the stories of each officer of the major clans. Empire mode is a wicked game where you get to make your own officers and fight over territory. Samurai Warriors 2/Empires was the newestjapanese related side. DW5/Empires was the latest Chinese side. Warriors orochi was pretty cool but it doesnt really tell the stories of any officer and it doesnt let you fight over territories. It does have a wicked weapon building mechanic. But stil I would go with SW2/DW5 depending on whether or not you like the japanese officers or chinese officers more. Sw2 seems like it has alot less officers.
Once you choose which culture you like then you just have to decide whether you want to have lots of cinema scenes and learn about the officers or if you want a ton of replay value and be able to make your own officers and fight over territories. The normal versions are great but you can only play through someone story so many times before you get bored out of your mind. There for I only buy the Empire versions so I can have infinite battles over all the different territories and have new battles each and every time.
If you like DW/SW games then I HIGHLY recommend getting your hands on Drakengard 1 for ps2 before it becomes rare. I just got mine off ebay and it arrived today. Im so glad I got that game.
Dw6 is already being worked on for the next gen consoles. I wish one of the ps2 games would have let you play VERSUS. Empires with versus mode would have been worth so much money!! I love star wars battlefront 2 for letting us play co-op or versus.

It's being released in the US in February. I can't wait to play it. :D
Dynasty Warriors 5 made me very happy with the arrival of Ling Tong and Pang De. Anyways, I really can't decide. I've had so much fun with 3, 4, and 5. I can't wait for Dynasty Warriors 6, doesn't matter how Gamespot reviews it. Its going to be the game that forces me to buy a PS3.
Game mechanics wise, 5 was the best. Still, there were some really memorable maps on DW2 that I wish they would add to DW6. They really need to look at some of their really great maps and add them to their newer games.
Orochi isnt the best though. it doesnt have the cutscenes from the normal dynasty/samurai games and it doesnt have the territory fighting that is in Empires.
